The mare Anna was born in Carna in 1947. At this time most registered mare were beginning to have bot the sire and the dam recorded in the stud book, but not so Anna, and neither has a breeder been listed. Anna had seven registered progeny: three gelding sons and four daughters. It is, however, only her two oldest daughters who have been of importance to the breed.
Anna's oldest daughter, Easter Anna, was born in 1959. She has three daughters in the Irish stud book, all with the Easter prefix, and she was subsequently exported to the Netherlands. Two of Easter Anna's daughters were also exported. Easter Eibhlin went to Belgium and her daughter Neptune Lorna has ten or so progeny with the suffix de Renival. The gelding Fakir de Renival took a reserve champion title in conjunction with the Belgian inspections in 2011. Easter Duchess was instead exported to Denmark in 1971, as a three-year-old. Among her Danish foals her youngest son, Dunlin Duke, has been a successful dressage pony.
Anna Maree, born in 1961, is no doubt the daughter who has meant the most for the spread of Anna's mare family. Among her eight registered progeny four are stallions, but only Carrabaun Boy has made an impression. In 1972, as a four-year-old, he won the stallion class at Clifden show and the year after he took an honourable third. In 1974 he was exported to Germany. Pat Lyne describes him in her book Out of the Mist as a "good old-fashioned short-legged fleabitten pony sire". Among his offspring are the German son Caraway with several championship titles from the German breed shows under his belt; Carrabaun Cracter, twice Supreme Champion at the French breed show and the Danish Elite mares Clementine, Clonemara Lady and Öxenholm Cora.
Carrabaun Boy's three year younger full sister, Sally Maree, is the one among Anna Maree's daughters who has been most successful as a brood mare. She was born in 1971 and started her career by being third in the filly foal class at Clifden show. In 1973 she was exported to Denmark and the Öxenholm stud where she became a brood mare. As a four-year-old she was inspected with a Class 1 premium* and she kept her class also in old age. Both in 1999 and in 2001, at the age of 30, she was awarded the title Grand Old Lady at the Danish inspections. For her progeny she was awarded an Elite premium.
Sally Maree's oldest daughter was Öxenholm Shirley, imported in utero to Denmark. As a foal Shirley was placed fourth at the pony festival in Odense and as a three year old she was awarded a class 1 at the inspections. At Öxenholm she was the dam of Öxenholm Sherry Time, in her turn the dam of Öxenholm Sipper, successful show jumper later exported to Norway, and the stallion Baron who competed successfully in dressage. In 1984 Shirley was exported to Sweden where she embarked on her own competition career with successes in both show jumping and dressage. She was gold awarded at on of the Swedish Pony Breeders' Society's shows in 1984 and she won her class at the Hagen show in 1986. Shirley's only foal in Sweden was the approved stallion Shirley's Thunderbell. He has on several occasions been gold awarded at the Swedish national show and in 1992 he was reserve Supreme Champion at the Hagen show. He has also competed successfully in show jumping. Among his offspring are the diploma mares Legends Belle and Talias Belleza,; quality test winners Käxgöls Piccobell, Köhls Igloo, Legends Bell and Wesaborgs Tji Fick Ni; progeny gold awarded at local pony shows: Born Thunderlight, Käxgöls Piccobell, Köhls Dilaza, Köhls Fidolina (also at the national show) and Lobelia II; and a range of successful performance ponies of which Käxgöls Piccobell has been among the top ten eventing Connemaras and Köhls Evelina and Köhls Fidolina among the top ten dressage Connemaras.
Sally Maree's only stallion son, Öxenholm Matador, was exported to the UK where he made himself a name in the show ring where he was the 1985 reserve Supreme Champion at the Brittish breed show, in ridden classes and as a sire. In 1992 he was awarded a Super Premium. Among his progeny are the stallion son Ballymore Luciano, also with a Super Premium; Bawdsey Blue Murder, many times a qualifier to to the ridden finals at Olympia; Spinway Celebration, Supreme Champion at the 2002 Brittish breed show and Frederiksminde Camilla with Supreme and reserve Supreme Champion titles from the Själland Connemara shows.
Sally Maree's last foal at Öxenholm was Öxenholm Mandy. She was youngstock champion at the international Connemara show at Roskilde in 1981 and was inspected with a Class 1 award the year after. One of Mandy's first foals was the second Swedish stallion from Anna's mare family - Öxenholm Mango. In Denmark Mango competed successfully in show jumping and sired the show jumper Hesteklewa Dusty Dame and the Class 1 mare Hesteklewa Wedgewood, Supreme Champion in conjunction with the 2007 Bornholm inspections. Mango came to Sweden in 1996 and he continued his show jumping career here. Among his progeny we find a number of performance ponies, primarily show jumpers but his offspring has also competition points from dressage and eventing. Most successful has perhaps been the partbreds Carpaccion CJ and Ekhagens Adroable, but Ekhagens Miracle of Love, runner up at the Swedish Connemara eventing championships of 2011, should not be forgotten. Caliterra CJ was gold awarded as a foal at the national show.
From the Öxenholm stud Öxenholm Mandy moved to another well-known Danish stud, Frederiksminde. Here she gave birth to another three sons who all became stallions of Danish and international fame. Frederiksminde Hazy Marvel was Supreme Champion four years in a row in conjunction with the inspections on Jylland and he has been Supreme Champion at breed shows in Finland, Germany and a Dutch international Connemara show. The successes of his progeny are too numerous to list here, but in Sweden we have Glaskopf Grey Joanna, diploma mare, dam of a stallion and youngstock and reserve Supreme Champion at the 2005 national show. The year after Marvel Frederiksminde Mandy Boy, the one of Mandy's sons to stay in Denmark, was born. He competed successfully in show jumping and many of his progeny have been successful in the same discipline. The most successful is Skousboe Mana who has participated in both the European and Nordic show jumping Championships. Mandy's youngest son, Frederiksminde Hazy Match, followed his brother to Germany where he too was successful in the show ring with several reserve Supreme Championships. From Germany he was exported to Ireland where he has been popular with the mare owners and sired many successful progeny across the world, for example last year's Supreme Champion at Clifden show, Drumbad Fletcher Moss.
Öxenholm Mandy also had three daughters at the Frederiksminde stud. Frederiksminde Madonna was the dam of Kirkeledgaards Margeaux, exported to Germany and a premium mare there, who was the founder of a successful clan of ponies with the Pattys prefix. This includes Pattys Maxime and Pattys Miracles Happen, both class winner at the German national show; Pattys Mille Miglia, class winner at the 2003 North Germany show and several ponies exported to the USA. Frederiksminde Mayfair is an Elite premium mare with successful progeny born at the Skousboe and Damgaard studs. Among Mayfair's progeny we find Skousboe Marive, Class 1 mare and reserve Supreme Champion in conjunction with the 2003 Bornholm inspections; Skousboe May Surprice, successful show jumper; and the Class 1 mare Skousboe Shamrock. Shamrock has in turn left and international group of foals. In Sweden we have Sternbergs Sweetheart with strong silver in the show ring and an initiated career as a show jumper and in Ireland we find Sweethearts full brother, the stallion Shanna Larry, successful both in hand and under saddle. Skousboe Marive is in turn the dam of Hesteklewa Marco, Hesteklewa Melanie and the Class 1 mare Hesteklewa Mary, all winning the in hand classes on Bornholm. In Sweden we have last year's winner of the Swedish style eventing Championships, Siegårds Mynthe. Öxenholm Mandy's last daughter was her namesake Frederiksminde Mandy, yet another one of the family's many Class 1 premium mares.
From Öxenholm Sally Maree moved to the Dorthealyst and finaly the Mosens studs. The result was three Class 1 daughters: Dorthealyst Salvie, Dorthealyst Sanikel and Mosens Rose Maree. Another daughter, Mosens Salia, gave, at the Hesselbjerggård stud, birth to the successful dressage pony Hesselbjerggård Highlander and she's the grand dam of Hesselbjerggård Ceylon, Class 1 mare and last year's Champion in conjunction with the Själland inspections. From Dorthealyst Sanikel we also find our last Swedish connections. Her son Skovbo's Earl's Shadow has competed in show jumping in Sweden. Shadow's niece, Nygaard's Fölfod showed her class at the Bornholm inspections in 2000 when she was awarded a Class 1 premium, was elected best pony of the inspections and took the reserve Supreme Champion title at the in hand show at the same time. In Sweden Fölfod has had a long and successful career as a show jumper with competition points every year from 2005 to 2014 and has made four starts so far this year. Anna's mare family has so far primarily enriched the Connemara pony in Sweden through her stallions and competition ponies. Let's hope that the mares from the family currently residing in Sweden, once they have completed their performance careers are given a chance to prove their worth also in the foaling box.
