Callowfeenish Dolly IRE 437

Callowfeenish Dolly, the name is probably familiar to many Connemara lovers around the world. It all began in 1936 when the first Dolly and the founder of the family was born. In 1938 the yearly Connemara show was held in Carna and there was a class for yearlings and two-year-olds of Connemara type out of non-registred mares. Winner was the two-year-old Callowfeenish Dolly shown by her owner Festy Mulkerrin. Spectators of the day could hardly guess the influence the filly was to have on the breed. Callowfeenish Dolly have three registred daughters, but only the last, her samesake Callowfeenish Dolly II, has had a lasting effect on the breed. Her effect was, however, all the more important with her eight daughters and four sons.

Already with her first daughter Callowfeenish Dolly II showed her qualities as a broodmare. Atlantic Mist was twice champion at Clifden show, 1968 and 1970, when she was eight and ten years respectively. As a broodmare she's the dam of Ballydonagh Cassanova, class winner at the 1993 Clifden show, twice champion at the Ballinalee show and a sire of many show jumpers. Cassanova is among others the sire of the Irish stallion Westside Mirah while we in Sweden have Poetic Justice, the show jumper and brood mare Molly and performance ponies like Monatigue Cassanova, Carron King, Gingernut and Western Wind. A daughter of Atlantic Mist, Ballydonagh Mystique won her class at the 1978 Clifden show and her half sister Ballydonagh Misterina was brood mare champion at the 1993 Brittish breed show and she has qualified to the mountain and moorland ridden finals at Olympia three times. Many of Atlantic Mists daughters found their ways to Britain. In addition to Misterina, Ballydonagh Mist of Aldborough became a brood mare at the Washington stod and Ballydonagh Suzy had a couple of foals registred with the Sydserff prefix. Before she came to Scotland Suzy became the mother of among others the stallion Westside Frank, sire of Smokey Duncan, successful in the Irish show ring. Among Misterina's offspring are Coolmore Frostique, who did well at the Royal Dublin Show before being exported to Germany, and Sydserff Avalon, exported to the US and a champion there. Another Atlantic Mist daughter, Ballydonagh Misty, was exported to the Netherlands.

Two years after Mist, Dolly II gave birth to her full sister, Atlantic Surf. She took the champion brood mare title at the 1971 Clifden show and turned out to be just as successful a brood mare as her mother and sister. From Surf's oldest daughter, Ashfield Silver Bow, we find the first Swedish connection to the Callowfeenish Dolly family. She was imported to Sweden in 1973 and was followed two years later by her daughter Glencastle Blackbird. Glencastle Blackbird had a daughter imported in utero, Corofin, who in 1979 was shown at a local show, but this was all I could find about this little branch of the family.

Atlantic Surf's oldest son was the stallion Atlantic Curragh was born in 1967. He spent a short time in Britain before moving on to the Netherlands. There he was several times champion at Connemara shows and keur-awarded. Among his offspring several have been awarded Dutch premiums such as ster, keur and prestatie (for performance). Giga van de Leliaard was youngstock champion at the 2003 Dutch breed show and Future van de Kiboets has participated in the European eventing championships. Curragh lived a long, productive and happy life and was described by his as "a lovely strong stallion and friend with the best character you can find". I had the pleasure to meet Curragh myself in 2002 when he was 35 years of age. Looking happy and well he did not show his age, but only two days after he took ill and had to end his days.

Nex Surf daughter was her mother's namesake Ashfield Surf. In Sweden she's perhaps best known as the mother of Surf's Own, dam of the double stallion mother Ashfield Fancy. Surf's Own went to Poland where she became a brood mare at the Blue Moon stud. Ashfield Fancy has been shown several times at the Hagen shows with a gold in 1995 as her biggest success. Her oldest son, Hagens O'Chief doesn't need much introduction in Sweden: quality test winner in 1988 and Champion at the 2001 Hagen show with as much as 45 points. He is also the sire of a long string of diploma mares, approved stallion, successfully quality tested ponies, show champions and performance ponies competing up to Swedish Championship level. Time will tell if Hagens Zephyr can match his half-brother. He recieved 43 points at the 2001 Hagen show, but his offspring are yet too young to have distinguished themselves. A third son of Fancy's, Hagens Ramsey, a gelding, has competed successfully in dressage. Fancy's daughter, Hagens Surf, has been one to carry on the Surf traditions. Diploma mare and several times gold awarded she's the mother of likewise many times gold awarded diploma daughter Hagens Yoleen; Hagens Aengus, second in last years show jumping championship for five-year-olds; and Gräns Diamond Surf, approved at the 2005 stallion inspections.

But Ashfield Surf have other descendantsthan Surf's Own and Ashfield Fancy. Her son Indra Rebel became a stallion in France and her daughter Kilkerrin Surf is the source of many good Surf ponies all over Europe. Two of Kilkerrin Surf's offspring went to Germany: Grange Surf's Charm as a brood mare at the Lonely Twin stud and Grange Surf Sparrow as a stallion at the Glaskopf stud. Grange Surf Sparrow has been reserve champion and champion at the South Germany show. Among his offspring are several in-hand champions both in Germany and in Denmark where he stood for a while, and several premium daughters. In Britain Kilkerrin Surf has Grange Coral Surf, in Austria Grange Merlin Surf and in Finland Grange Sunset Surf. Still in Ireland are among others Grange Ruby Surf, reserve youngstock champion at the 2004 Clifden show.

But let's return to Atlantic Surf. In 1972 she gave birth to her next successful son, Atlantic Swirl. Swirl was exported to Britain where he stood at the Grayswood stud. In the beginning of the eighties his progeny had collected enough success to qualify their father for an "in-hand progeny premium". Several of his offspring has qualified for Olympia where Grayswood Village Peregrin has won and Grayswood Village Skylark been runner up. Grayswood Sea Spray has won the corresponding Working Hunter Pony final and Peregrin has been the runner up. Grayswood Village Skylark and Lockinge Foxglove has been champion at the British breed show twice each and Rosenaharley Laurinda once. Swirl is also the sire of three premium stallions, the US export Cocum Coppelia of Tower Hill who has won the american Brood Mare Trophy. Atlantic Surf may perhaps mostly been a stallion producer with additional sons like Ashfield Prince, Ashfield Hunter's Jewel and Ashfield Festy. Ashfield Festy was successful at Clifden show during the early nineties and as a father he's behind Dark Stranger, nowadays in Britain and a champion at a local show in 1999. In Ireland is Fairyhill Lass, class winner at the 1995 Clifden show and Island View, class winner in 1994 and 1996. In Sweden we have the approved stallion Grange Flynn Sparrow and the show jumper Cuffesgrange Also.

After having two full sisters by Carna Bobby, Callowfeenish next had two full brothers by Rebel Wind. The first was Island Count. He had the less popular palomino colour and mostly worked as a teaser at a thoroughbred stud in Britain. One of his daughters, Oaklands Crystal Cloud, won her class at the 1986 British breed show and in Sweden are the daughter Easter Stripe and the gelding Sir Robin Ice Moon imported in Utero.

If Island Count didn't have a very big impact on the breed nothing can be said of his brother but the opposite. The name Marble is familiar to Connemara lovers everywhere. He was reserve champion at the 1973 Clifden show and three years later he was exported to Denmark and the Öxenholm stud. At the international Connemara festival at Roskilde in 1977 he was supreme champion and two years later he took the same title at the international Connemara show at Vetlanda. But it is as much for his progeny that Marble is famous. Among the Irish-born are the British super premium mare Celebration Cream; Gold Fort, reserve champion at the 1974 Clifden show; Granite Grey, class winner at the 1994 British breed show and Park Cherry, Ridden Connemara of the Year in 1979. In Denmark there's a long string of class 1 daughters, showjumpers, eventers, dressage ponies and show winners like Öxenholm Memory, Öxenholm Mandy and the British export super premium stallion Öxenholm Marator. Sweden has welcomed Öxenholm Moskito, stallion and Swedish dressage champion, and his Elite premium and several times gold awarded half brother Öxenholm Marble Jr. In dressage Öxenholm Boom has also been successful with a Swedish champion titel in 1992 at the heigth of his carreer.

A full sister of Island Count and Marble was born in 1973 and was called Grey Belinda. Her daughter Darabellwas exported to Britain and became a brood mare at the Millfields stud. Belinda's son, Glencarrig Finn has taken several seconds and firsts at Clifden show and is a registred stallion. His gelding son Glensheen Finn was doing consistently well in the Clifden show gelding class around the turn of the century. Glencarrig Finns full sister Glencarrig Aedin has also been seen among the Clifden show winners and her offspring have done even better. Her daughter Glencarrig Eleanor won her class as a three-year-old and has since been sold to Britain where she was reserve champion at the 2004 breed show and have been champion and reserve champion at a number of local shows over the years. Her brother Glencarrig Prince was youngstock champion at the 2000 Clifden show and supreme champion three years later after being champion stallion the year before. Also Glencarrig Princes offspring have done well with wins at smaller shows as well as Clifden and Dublin Horse Show. In Sweden he's represented by the son Coosheen Finbarr.

Another sibling in this quartet by Rebel Wind - Callowfeenish Dolly II is the mare Callowfeenish Cream. Her greatest success in the show ring was in 1999 when she was third in the oldest mare class at Clifden show. As a mother she's behind the stallions Coosheen Bailey and Coosheen Callowfeenish Cashel.

In 1977 Callowfeenish Dolly II visited Atlantic Storm and the following year she gave birth to the daughter Willow. Her show career has given a a third among the three-year-old mares at the 1981 Clifden Show. Her daughter Ashfield Goodwill was exported to Sweden. Goodwills daughter Winnie Dun has a third and a silver medal from the 1997 Swedish breed show. A half sister to Goodwill is Ashfield Mist who is the mother of another Swedish pony, Innellan Alice, brood mare at the Långarnö stud.

Callowfeenish Dolly II spent her last years at the Abbeyleix stud. Here she gave birth to her last two foals, a colt and a filly by Coosheen Finn. The son, Abbeyleix Dolphin win the class for two- and three-year-old stallions at the 1983 Clifden show and his son Seafield Dolphin was the best colf foal in 1985. In 1988 Dolphin was exported to Austria. Among his foals there are the stallion Silver Rock and the daughters A.C. Windy Blackborn, supreme champion at a national horse show for all breeds in 2003, and Double D, champion at the Austrian connemara breed show the same year. The last foal of Callowfeenish Dolly II was the daughter Abbeyleix Delphinium who was born in 1981. As a two-year-old she won the championship at the Clifden show. She was later exported to britain where she qualified to Olympia before she became a full time brood mare at the Lockinge stud.
