Coolaghy Grey IRE 1410

There are mare families that are so big and influential that they are known and have branches around the world. Coolaghy Grey's mare family is not one of those. Instead her family is rather anonymous in most Connemara countries of the world, but in two countries she has made a major impact - the Netherlands and Sweden.

But let's start from the beginning. Coolaghy Grey was born in 1949 and was registered under Moycullen ownership. Tom McLochlainn describes her in his book Moycullen Ponymen as a true allround pony who worked the farm, took the family to church on Sundays, was shown at the Oughterard shows and bred sought after foals. Her oldest registered foal was the the stallion Coolaghy Shamrock. He never had any registered foals but was probably one of the first Connemaras to be exported to Portugal. Coolaghy Grey's following two foals, the daughters Lorna Doon and Doon Paddys Reward, were exported to the USA, but neither seem to have had any registered progeny.

Keaney's Girl was born in 1961 and was the Coolaghy Grey daughter to have the largest influence on the breed abroad. Her oldest daughter, Coolaghy Rebel, was exported to the Netherlands where she was the dam of a string of ponies with the Seaspray prefix. Seaspray Winnie was the dam of ster premium Gentle Look, but the strongest branch of the family came from another of Coolaghy Rebel's daughters, Seaspray Bellmaid. Bellmaid's daughter Looses Rebel also has a ster premium as has Rebel's daughter Rebel Cloudy Girl, granddaughter Pepperony's Quick Star and great granddaughter Atlantic Beauty. Atlantic Beauty furthermore has a prestatie premium, a premium awarded the best performance ponies.

Looses Miscount was Seaspray Bellmaid's second daughter, born in 1981, and she has been awarded with a Keur premium. Keur mares should have a good composition, quality foals and also have been performance tested or have competed up to a certain level. Miscount started as a performance pony, but after an injury she became a brood mare instead. In the Netherlands older mares in the stud book can be awarded a preferent premium if three or more more of their progeny have been approved as stallions, awarded premiums or judge to a high standard. Miscounts quality progeny ensured that she in 2003 also could be awarded a preferent premium. At her website, Inez Kooij from the Leliaard stud describes Miscount as a sweet mare, a real personality.

Miscount's oldest daughter, May West van Graaf Janshof was exported to Germany and became the dam of the approved stallion TC McKinley. The following daughter Goldstar van Graaf Janshof has been awarded ster, keur and prestatie premiums and she was also the mare champion at the 2001 Dutch breed show. She is also the dam of Elstar van de Leliaard, ster mare and supreme champion at the 2010 Dutch breed show. Miscount's son Goldbles van Graaf Janshof was exported to Finland and and participated in the 2009 Nordic showjumping Championships. Fleur van de Leliaard also has a ster premium whole Giga van de Leliaard and Hagrid van de Lelliard have been breed show youngstock and foal champions respectively. The promising Hagrid unfortunately died shortly after taking his title.

Seaspray Bellmaid's third daughter, Looses Keaney, has also left her hoofprints on the Dutch Connemara scene. Her daughter, Looses Naima, is a ster mare as is the granddaughter Gentle van de Bossenhoeve and the great granddaughter Dunlaith van de Liebestate was youngstock champion at the 2001 Dutch breed show.

If Coolaghy Rebel has been important on the Dutch Connemara scene her one year younger full sister, Moy Fireside, has made her impact here in Sweden. She was born in 1966 and was imported to Sweden as a two-year-old. Of Moy Fireside's foals it was without doubt the ones by Tiger Boy who were the most successful. Cantat was unfortunately never registered, but competed successfully in showjumping during the 80s. Aniara, eventually made her way to Finland where she together with another Fireside daughter, Rosetta, had a number of foals with the VV prefix.

Before she was exported, however, Aniara, began her successful career as a brood mare, partly at the Myrens stud. She was awarded a diploma as a three-year-old and later earned a silver at the breed show and a silver in a local show progeny class. Some of Aniara's progeny have also been silver awarded in hand, but it is as a producer of performance ponies she has made the biggest impression. Myrens Anis, Myrens Anitra and Myrens Anton, as well as the granddaughter Tudy, have all earned competition points show jumping and Myrens Arnljot and Myrens Anton have competed in dressage. Most successful was Myrens Anis who during the mid 90s twice was among the top 100 show jumping ponies in the country while he was sixth and seventh show jumping Connemara respectively.

Myrens Anitra also made the top 100 showjumping ponies during the 90s. After that she entered the breeding box and what good fortune that was as she in 2011 could be awarded her Elite premium for her quality offspring who primarily have made a name for themselves as show jumpers. At the Ängaskog webpage "Myran" is described as a straght-forward little pony, kind but forward under saddle. The oldest daughter, Poetic Annie, needs little presentation. She has earned show jumping points every year since 1999 and been among the top 100 every year since 2000 and to 10 show jumping Connemaras every year since 2002. She has also been top ten all breeds in 2012 and 2013 and the best Swedish show jumping Connemara in 2012 and 2013. She has Swedish show jumping championship rosettes in 2002, and 2010 - 2014 with a gold medal from the 2012 indoor championships. Add to this a team silver at the 2012 Nordic Championships. Before her show jumping carreer started Annie had a foal, Poetic Gilbert who also has been a successful show jumper with competition points every year between 2005 and 2012.

Myrens Anitra has also bred several full siblings to Annie. Poetic Byron has also been a successful show jumber and was among the top to show jumping Connemaras 2003 - 2006. Poetics Joyce and Ängaskogs Cooper have also done well show jumping. Ängaskogs Dexter has a jumping award from his three-year-old test and Ängaskogs Anima from her quality test and she also participated in the national quality test finals. Anima has also been gold awarded at the breed show.

Coolaghy Rebel and Moy Fireside are without doubt the two major branches of Coolaghy Grey's mare family. Outside of them Lambay Canary was exported to Sweden, but he was never registered here and I have not been able to find any other information about him. Some of Coolaghy Grey's descendants also made their way to France, but I know nothing else about them either. Instead I want to finish with Ängaskogs Anima and a quote from her owner's blog. "30th April 2012 I bought my first pony, Anima, has never regretted it for a second, I love here so increadibly much, it's a great joy for me to sit on her back, long for that feeling every day,..." Tom MacLochlainn writes in Moycullyn Ponymen how you can see from the photo of Coolaghy Grey that she is a beloved member of the family. 60 years later her descendants evoke the same feelings in their owners.
