Clynagh Bay IRE 1733

There are mare families that have become so lanrge it is almost impossible to survey and members can be found in more or less every country where there are Connemaras. Clynagh Bay's mare family is not one of them.

Clynagh Bay was, as the name implies, a bay mare, born in 1951 in the ownership of John Toole (Anne) in Leam. At the time of registration she had, however, been sold to Tom Feeney in Clynagh and all her ten offspring in the studbook have him listed as his breeder. Clynagh Bay's oldest registered daughter, Grey Girl, was born in 1958. Grey Girl attracted major attention as a foal when Tom Feeney had a shameless 65 punds asking price at the market at Maam Cross. She was later sold for 62 pounds and 10 shilling and the buyer, Jim Lee, calmly noted that future would tell whether the price was high or low. Three years later she won her class at the Royal Dublin Show and she was sold to a buyer on Jersey for 250 pounds. Grey Girl won at the Royal Dublin Show again in 1964 and also at Clifden show in 1966. Grey Girl had no registered daughters, but two stallion sons of which Murrisk must be the best known. Among his progeny are successful stallions like Lambay Lord in Austria, Lismore Sobranie (Super Premium stallion) and Spinway Playboy in the UK, Lambay Maria (Elite mare) in Denmark and Little Beauty in Germany. In Sweden we find Hummelbro Victoria with an Elite preimuom and the Swedish Connemara society brood mare award; Lambay Dream, a diploma mare with a gold award from the Swedish breed show; the performance ponies Lambay Dubh and Lambay Spinning Lass, and the overheight Usan Wind with his multiple gold awards. Murrisk's half brother Cuchulainn (IRE 448, not to be confused with his namesake IRE 789) was not as successful as a stallion.

Clynagh Bay's foal from 1963, Clynagh Festival, was exported to Germany. She had, as far as I could find, three daughters of which the oldest, Fairy, became a foundation mare at the Wirthsmühle stud. Her granddaughter Wirthsmühle Fanella is a Stats premium mare (awarded to the best three-year-olds) and was like her grandmother a brood mare at Wirthsmühle. Her daughter Wirthsmühle Finlass was exported to the Netherlands where she received a Ster premium and she won her class and was Supreme Champion at the Dutch breed show 2014. She has also won at other in hand shows and won her class at the 2016 German jubilee show. Finlass' Dutch daughter, Van de Arenbosch Formidable, has also been awarded a Ster premium and was a class winner and youngstock champion at the same jubilee show.

Clynagh Bay also became the mother of an approved stallion, Stormy Bay, who was born in 1965. I have only found 21 offspring sired by him, but in Sweden we find Shane, the second most successful show jumping connemara in 1976, and Coogu Dawn, who's primary achievement is a silver at the 1986 Swedish breed show. Clynagh Chucky, Clynagh Bay's daughter from 1964, and Glenlo Poppy, Stormy Bay's full sister from 1966, I have not been able to find much about. Glenlo Poppy seems to have been exported to the Netherlands and had as a brood mare several offspring with the Batouwe prefix. Her daughter Batouwe Lady Love, has a Ster premium. Clynagh Bay's youngest daughter, Rynn Star, was born in 1971. She seems to have made her way to France and the Scarpe stud. Of nine registred progeny, Unao de la Scarpe and Toscan of Scarpe seems to have been successful show jumpers but I cannot find any recent descendants.

In 1971, as a three-year-old, Moy Clynagh Grey was exported to Sweden. She had one foal at the Krikas stud and was then sold on. In total she had six foals in Sweden. Her youngest sin, Grey, was shown at local shows a couple of times without any major success, but his one year younger full brother, Cliff, competed successfully in dressage and was the ninth best dressage Connemara in 1987. The youngest daughters Amorina and Sorina had a son each, but I have not been able to find anything else about them. No, it is Moy Clynagh Grey's oldest daughter, Krikas Irish Elf, who ensures that this family receives due attention.

Krikas Irish Elf was born in 1972 and she had her first daughter as a four-year-old. This daughter, Kickan, was exported to Finland at the age of eight, but I haven't been able to find anything further about her. Krikas Irish Elf went on to compete in show jumping and took competition points in 1985. In 1988 she did her only, as far as I have been able to find, appearance in the show ring and was awarded a silver at a local show. Irish Elf returned to breeding and in 1988 Tiger Elf was born. Tiger Elf became a reliable, albeit not the easiest to ride, show jumper with competition points 2002 - 2007. In 2006 and 2007 she was shown at the breed show resulting in a gold and a silver in the veterans class. Her oldest daughter Stockmossens Bona has competition points in dressage and is the dam of among others the show jumper Edens Molly and the diploma mare Edens Lotus. Another daughter of Tiger Elf, Delilah II, provided lunch break entertainment during the 2019 Swedish breed show where she was shown ridden with gradually less and less equipment until none was left. She has been shown at several occasions resulting in both a win and a gold award.

The year after Tiger Elf was born Krikas Irish Elf had the sone Kaifas who became a reliable performance pony, first as an eventer and later with show jumping as his main discipline. Efter participating in the quality tests as a four-year-old, it was during twelve years in the 90ies and 00ies only in 2004 that he had no competition points. Kaifas was followed by Katitzie, diploma mare and dam of the show jumper Kenzo. Most successful of the offspring of Irish Elf has, however, her 1992 son Kazmir been with competition points in show jumping as well as dressage and eventing. Kazmir's major successes have been in eventing where he has been among the top ten eventing Connemaras no less than seven times and twice among the top ten eventing ponies in the coungty. He won a silver at the 2002 Swedish eventing championships for ponies 130 - 140 cm, a gold three years later and in 2007 he finished eight. In 2005 he also won a silver in the regional dressage championships. Kazmir has been shown in hand twice with a silver both at a local show and at the 2010 breed show where he also on the veteran class.

Kewin, Irish Elf's stallion son, was born the year after Kazmir. He won the class for two-year-old colts and geldings at the 1995 breed show ans was approved as a stallion two years later. Kewin was a performance pony in his own right and won like his one year older half brother competition points in show jumping, dressage and eventing. Among 16 listed progeny of Kewin you can find the diploma mare Di Kevina, the quality test winner Riverdance, the young pony championship qualifier Rovalds Zewinia. In addition Kysings Dorothy, Mingla, Rovalds Zewinia, Stuves Chili Vivaldi and the part bred Brazils Belo Noite all have show jumping competition points and the part bred Jémini has competition points in dressage.

The same year that Irish Elf had her last daughter, Kapriol, in 1994, she passed away. Two years ago Kewin was also reported having left for greener pastures. Clynagh Bay's family has always been small and the German branch at the Wirthsmühle stud seems to be still active there have been no foals born from the family in Sweden since Edens Molly in 2008. Molly is currently busy with a successful show jumping career and it seems there might be a while before a new chapter about Clynagh Bay's mare family can begin.
