Cuach na Coille IRE 236

One of the great show winners of the 40-ies in Connemara was Cuach na Coille. In those days the annual Connemara show was not yet held in Clifden but in Carna and a winner was not eligible to participate the following year. It is very likely that Cuach na Coille hadn't been satisfied with winning her class in 1940, 1942 and 1944 if she had been allowed to participate each year. In 1944 the Archbishop's Cup was awarded for the first time to the best brood mare and Cuach na Coille confirmed her superiority by winning it. The previous year's winner was eligible to compete for the Archbishop's Cup the next year and Cuach na coille won the cup again in 1945 for the secon year running in spite of not being allowed to compete in the other classes.

Like other mares in Connemara Cuach na Coille foaled once a year. As many as four of her sons were registred and two of them, Kylesalia Star and Coill Ruadh, were standing in Connemara, but neither of the sons left any deeper traces in the breed. Coill Ruadh was the only of the brothers to leave any registred daughters of which Five of Diamonds was a winner at Clifden on several occasions before being exported to the USA.

Of Cuach na Coilles daughters the oldest, Kylesalia Grey, had only one daughter who herself had no registred progeny. It was instead daughter number two, Cuach Og, who kept the family in Connemara. As an 18-year-old, Cuach na Coille was exported to England with the hope to show what a good mare if the unknown Connemara breed should look like. The hopes were not in vain and she won her class at the first ECPS show. Cuach na Coille was carrying a foal to Tiger Gill and the resulting filly, Cockle of Calla, later became brood mare at the Watercombe stud. Cuach na Coille ended her days at the Sankence stud where she bred her last foal, Sankence Springtime, at the age of 26.

Cuach Og had two daughters of importance. The first, Jump the Wall, had eight registred daughters, the last at the age of 21. The first daughter, Rebel Rose, was exported to the USA where she became the mother of among others the stallion RBR Playboy, whose daughter RBR Miss Patrice has won the Camlin trophy for an outstanding all-around performance. Another of Jump the Wall's daughters, Homeward Bound, has enriched the Grange stud with two of her daughters, Home Lover and Party Gay Girl. Party Gay Girl had, before she went to the Grange stud, the filly Falcon Crest who was exported to the UK and the Riversdale stud. A thrid daughter of Homeward Bound's, Homeward Bound II, is the dam of among others the brittish stallion Glencarrig Bobby.

Jump the wall went to the Ashfield stud, just like her daughter Glencastle Valley. Glencastle Valley's daughter, Ashfield Rolling Stone, was exported to the UK where she had foals with the Innellan prefix, while her dam's sister with the similar name Ashfield Rolling Rock went to France. Another of Jump the Wall's daughters from the Ashfield stud, Ashfield Judy, is the dam of the stallion Ormond Oliver, sire of for example the Swedish Ashfield Cathal Crobdeargh, the Dutch Ashfield Silver Cloud and the Austrian breed show winner Windy Beauty.

Ashfield Judy has also spread her genes abroad, through her daughter Ormond Judy Sparrow who is now in the USA, and through her maybe most known daughter White Rock Princess. White Rock Princess started her career in the show ring and was runner up for the championship at Clifden as a three-year-old. After being exported to the UK she had an equally successful career under saddle and was the most successful Connemara in 1995 and also well placed the year before. White Rock Princess has also done well as a brood mare and is the dam of Cocum Pandora. Pandora was champion foal at the EIRE show in 1988 and Connemara champion at the National Pony Society show at Malvern in 1994 and is now living in Sweden.

The second Cuach Og daughter of importance is Moonlight Rambler. Half of her eleven registred progeny was exported. Moonlight Model went to France while Moonlight Mystery came to the UK. The son Ballintemple Dun Rambler, father of the French show winner Knockadreen Holiday Cliff and the brittish premium mare Ballintemple Gold Flake, stayed in Ireland, as did Moonlight Serenade whose decendants later spread to France with Abbey Alice, the UK with Lettermore Lullaby and the Netherlands with the ster-premium mare Lullaby.

Moonlight Rambler's last three exported progeny all ended up in Sweden. The stallion Curragh Colm and the mare Easter Moonlight were both imported in 1970 to the Råcksta stud. Easter Moonlight had only one foal, and by her full brother. Among Curragh Colm's other progeny is the diploma mare Råcksta Jacquette and his unregistred son Monte, who was a successful dressage pony in the early 80-ies.

The family has had most of it's importance in Sweden through Wayside Rambler who was imported already in 1965 but was never entered in the Swedish stud book. Her two daughters, Shannon av Haga and Sheelin, have both contributed to spreading the family. Shannon av Haga's oldest daughter, Charola, have, apart from giving birth to foals, also competed in show jumping. Her firstborn, Boy's Lassie, won her class at the 1986 breed show. Her younger sister, Dancing Belle, has been even more successful in the show ring with 42 points and a reserve Best in Show title at the 1988 breed show. Dancing Belle's son, Royal Dancer, has also been gold awarded as a two-year-old, and has since gone for a career as a dressage pony, while his dam is a brood mare at the Elektor stud.

Shanola, Shannon av Haga's second daughter, is the dam of just one daughter, Black Beauty, who achieved a 39 points at the 1989 breed show at the age of 22. Her oldest daughter, Beauty Love, like her son, August, have both competed in show jumping. Black Beauty's two other daughters are both gold awarded at the breed shows. Funny Girl II when she was awarded 40 points in 1989, and Golden Beauty II two years later as a yearling when she also was runner up for the youngstock championship. Golden Beauty II is also a diploma mare. Her daughter Golden Eye was gold awarded at the local show in Ängelholm las year and proved herself to be a promising dressage talent at this year's quality test.

Sheelin finally, Wayside Rambler's second daughter, had five offspring all of which were given cheerful names like Joy, Gay, Happy, Merry and Joke. Shannon Gay was the one to keep the line going. Her only daughter, Sandra's, greatest show achievement was 39 points and a second place at the 1991 breed show. Sandra's offspring have proved to have the jumping gene. The son Cora-San have competed in show jumping and at this year's quality test O'Tusan scored a 8-9 in the loose jump which qualified him to the final where he ended up in fourth place.
