Derryglin Grey IRE 750

At the birth of Derryglin Grey, the year was written 1940 with world war and other sad business. The number of registred ponies born in 1940 were a bit more than 70 and Derryglin Grey was one of them. During the 40-ies and 50-ies the CPBS was experimenting with Irish Draught crosses, perhaps to get slightly heavier, stronger ponies for draught work while petrol was limited? Derryglin Grey has three daughters and two of them descend from Irish Draught stallions. Her oldest, May Grey was by May Boy, but didn't leave any traces. Derryglen Grey's youngest, Georgina, was by May Boy's son Farravane Boy and she was exported to the USA. I have found seven of her progeny, two mares and five stallions, but none of the daughters seem to have had any purebred offspring, and of the sons only two have had three and nine progeny respectively.

It is instead Derryglin Grey's middle daughter, who with her own daughter, have given rise to the main part of the mare family. Also Derryglin Winter has her ancestry outside of the breed, but this time in the shape of her thoroughbred grandsire Winter as her name suggests. Derryglin Winter was born in 1949 and had her only registred offspring in 1953, a mare called Acid Drop, and with her tha family started gathering momentum. Acid Drop's oldes offspring, Rock of Cashel, had eleven registred progeny. The oldest of these, Peg of Oakleigh, passed through the UK on her way to Denmark. In Denmark she became a brood mare at the Lykkesholm stud and her daughter there, Lykkesholm Gine was a class 1 mare.

The next of Rock of Cashel's daughters was Dooneen Grey. Her oldest foalr was the stallion Black Billy who was exported to the Netherlands where he had a very short carreer at stud. One of his few daughters, Dun Alice, has, however, been successful in the show ring. Dooneen Grey's second stallion son was Thunder Storm who was bought by the CPBS in the hope of finding a successor to his sire Thunderbolt. As a yearling he was third in his class at Clifden show, but as a sire he had no major successes.

More successful was Thunder Storm's full sister Dooneen Star. Every year between 1981 and 1988 and in 1990 she was top three in her class at Clifden show. As a brood mare she may be one of the strongest links in the family. Her daughter Dooneen Castle was champion foal ath the 1986 Clifden show and later in the top threes in 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993 and 1996 with a victory in 1992. Another daughter, Dooneen Moonlight was top three in 1991 and 1994 and Dooneen Pride was third in 2000. The stallion son Dooneen Thunder won the class for yearling colts in 1994 and was youngstock champion. In 1996 he won the class for three year old colts and in addition he was second in 1995 and 1996. In other words, Dooneen Star and her offspring were a dominating factor in the Clifden ring during the 80-ies and 90-ies.

In 1988 Dooneen Grey had a daughter called Castlestrange Sparrow. From her oldest daughter, Castlestrange Sparrow Hill, we find the first Swedish connection of the family, Millfall Rover who in Sweden won at a local show with a strong silver award. Both Castlestrange Sparrow Hill and Castlestrange Sparrow have other offspring exported to both the UK and the USA, but I have little information about them. Sparrow's stallion son however participated in the Irish performance test in 1999.

Following Dooneen Grey, Rock of Cashel had a set of foals at the Tulira stud. The gelding Tulira Blue Hawaii was exported to the UK where he was successful in ridden classes. Two consecutive years, 1980 and 1981, he qualified to the ridden finals at Olympia. Another Tulira progeny was the mare Tulira Lily. her daughter Atlantic Ludy is the dam of the gelding Aran Jolly Fellow who has been a successful show jumper in Sweden. A full sister of Jolly Fellow, Aran Daisy, is in turn the dam of the gelding Quicksilver who was exported to the UK where he has been highly placed in the Performance Award Shceme. During the second last run he was fifth over all and the best dressage pony. Another of Tulira Lily's offspring worth mentioning is the stallion Rebel Justice, exported to Denmark, and bringing the Rock of Cashel branch to a close is another Danish export, Castle Beginning, who has been a successful dressage pony.

Returning to Acid Drop, she had a daughter in 1965 by Knockranny Ruby. Ruby Dun was exported to Denmark and became a brood mare at the Holen stud. Two of her foals there were exported to Sweden. Holens Ritti took part in the 1978 Swedish breed show where she managed seventh in the older mare class. Her daughter Zarahlee Rose on the other hand has been gold awarded and was second in her class at the 1994 Swedish breed show. Zarahlee Rose was also a successful dressage pony during the early nineties and is the dam of Ballina Lee who also has performed in the show ring.

The next Acid Drop daughter was Acidilla. She seems to have been exported to the UK, but I have failed to find anything further about her. In Ireland she left behind two offspring, the oldest of which, Ashfield Queen was the dam of the Swedish export Glencastle Lark. Glencastle Lark participated in the veterans class of the 2002 breed show at the age of 30, but in great shape. At this time she was already a great grandmother and she has left a long line of ponies during her time as a brood mare at the Hold stud. From Glencastle Larke we find the diploma mare Hold Patsy La Belle who has also been gold awarded, won her class at the breed show and has a Best In Show from a local show in 2004. Also Patsy's mother Hold Double Belle has been gold awarded several times and was youngstock champion at the 1997 breed show. Other breed show class winners include Hold Bobbo Bell and Hold Bubble Bell in 2006 and 2005 respectively, and Bubble Bells' daughter Bubble Joy who won the breed show class winner in 2005. Several of Glencastle Lark's descendants have participated in quality tests with perhaps the biggest success for Hold Larkin Bell's who scored over 8 on the allround score in two successive year, and also in her dressage score as a four year old. Hold Patry La Belle recieved a dressage award in her three-year-old test and Hold Blondie Bell Haze qualified to the quality test jumping final in 2002. Lastly, but by no means least, Hold Larrikin Label has been a successful show jumper.

Finally I have found two more daughters of Acid Drop's: Easter Drop and Iced Caramel. Both were exported to France and at least Easter Drop seems to have given rise to a small branch of the family. I have, however, failed to found anything but names, but I'm sure there are gems to be found here to with more insight into French results.
