Fag an Bealach IRE 209

In the year 1927 a filly was born and given the name Fag an Bealach. She was owned by Fest Folan from Carna and she was to be foundation mare for a mare family which in Sweden maybe more than anywhere else has been very successful. Fag an Bealach had five registred foals, a lot in those day. Four mares and a stallion. The stallion, Prospect Star was sold to Co. Wexford and left no traces. The same was true for three of Fag an Bealach's daughters, with the exception of Golden Pearl who had a registred daughter, but left no lasting branch of the family.

It was left to the fourth daughter to keep the line going. An t'Sailchuach is gaelic for the Viol and that was the name given to daughter number two who stayed in the ownership of festy Folan. She may be most famous for being the mother of Strongbow. He was one of only two sons by Calla Rebel and would have been useful in Connemara. Instead he spent most of his life as a teaser at a stud outside Dublin. Only when old was he sent some mares from the Mervyn and Clonkeehan studs and left with them sons to keep the line going. at an old age Strongbow was exported to Germany, but he was by then no longer fertile and consequently never used for breeding.

An t-Sailchuach's youngest daughter was Forest Flower. She has with her foals contributed to spreading the breed around the world. A daughter, Atlantic Flower, was exported to the Netherlands ans another, Wisbridge Mistral, to the UK. Mistral has been Champion at a local show and a brood mare at the Millfields and Haddingley studs. Another daughter, Carheen Blossom has daughters both on Ireland and in the UK and Forest Flower's son Inis O'Hara brought the Thunderbolt blood to Australia. Inis O'Hara was also approved for the Australian Saddle Pony Register, so maybe his blood also goes on among Australian riding ponies.

With Atlantic Breeze Fag an Bealach's family came to Sweden. before Breeze was exported as a six year old she managed a third at Clifden show and a first at the Royal Dublin show in 1965. In Irelan she left a daughter by Atlantic Storm. Breeze was part of the large imports the Countess of Oxenstierna made in the sixties, and her first foal was carrying the Värnbergs prefix. Later she was sold as a brood mare. Her 1972 daughter, Atlantic Bell Z was described as an unusually well developed yearling when she won her class at the 1973 breed show. Among her offspring is Atlantic Princess, class winner from the 1978 Pony show and her daughter the diploma mare Princess Jasmin. Another of Atlantic Breeze's daughters is the dam of the stallion Kamik Breeze who has made a name as a show jumper and who in the 2001 breed show WHP class showed, beaming with joy, that 25 years is nothing to a real pony.

So, what happened to Atlantic Breezes Irish born daughter? She was given the name Atlantic Treasure and was exported to Sweden too where she became the founder of the largest branch of the family. Atlantic Treasure came to the Möllan stud in southern Sweden and most of her foals carry the Möllans prefix. Among her offspring is multiply gold awarded Mölland Picina, the Elite mare Möllans Anneli, the performance ponies Atlantic Petite and Casino and also the stallions Möllans Allert and Möllans Castro and the stallion mother Möllans Rosette, the mother of Finn.

Atlantic Petite was a successful show jumper and the fourth best connemara in her category in 1984. When she began her carrier as a brood mare she passed on her performance genes to the next generation. Petrov and Petra have both been show jumpers, and Petrov also eventing. The grandson Pascal began his carrier by winning the performance test in 1980 and have then gone on to be a successful dressage pony. Atlantic City, another of the Treasure daughters that did not carry the Möllans prefix is the mother of something as unusual as an Switzerland export. Her son Coral Sea left for the alps in 1997.

The larges branch form Atlantic Treasure is without doubt from Möllans Anneli. In 1990 Anneli was awarded with the Swedish Connemara Society brood mare award and her offspring have fully secured this both in the show ring and under saddle. The oldest son Viggen has been gold awarded on several occasions and won all kind of titles, crowned by a breed show Best in Show titel from 1981. Among the daughters Anemone and the full sisters Hagens Nelina and Hagens Olivia have been gold and diploma awarded. Olivia was the youngstock champion and runner up for the Best in Show title in the 1990 breed show and has since gone to Finland where she was Champion mare in 1998. Another of Anneli's daughters, Anemi, won her class at the 1981 breed show and has been exported to Norway. In show jumping circuits one have been able to se Falco, Freddie and Amnion. The following generations are still young, but here we find the diploma mares Javelina, Hagens Sheila and Hagens Xantina. Gold has been awarded to Grace Kilbeggan, Hagens Ulina, Hagens Vanessa, Nirvana and Nirvana's daughter Oliwia, and Grace Kilbeggan brought on top of that the youngstock Champion title home from the Mälardalen's Pony society's show in 2000. We also have the approved stallion Gunne Anton and at the quality test in Jönköping in 1997 the runner up in both four- and five-year-olds traced back to Anneli, Lurifax III and San Miguel respectively. Surely there are more performance ponies to expect from this source in the future.

Another successful branch, although smaller than Anneli's, stems from Möllans Picina. Her daughter Carnaby Kajsa Kavat has been gold awarded on several occasions just like Kajsa's daughter Katitzy Kavat. Kajsa also have an approved son, Kulan Kavat, who was approved in 2000 with extra credits for his jumping ability. Another of Picinas daughters, Pims was a diploma mare in 1991 and won the class for three year olds at that year's breed show. At the quality test in Nybro in 1999 two generations from this branch, Killen Kavat and Killala Kavat, were placed second and third among the four years old Connemaras. Seen to all the successes, both in shows and ridden, that Atlantic Treasures large family has had it is only to regret that not more countries have been able to take part of Fag an Bealach's nice mare family.

Though she was somewhat working behind the scenes of Swedish breeding, she has, being the dam of "Apan", been something very special to me. The gelding Apollo was my first Connemara, a fantastic horse in every way (and it was probably not just me who thought so).

I am lucky to be a owner of Hagens Olivia since December 2001. She has had four foals while in Finland, a colt (now gelded) and a filly by Ardnasillagh O'Flaherty and two colts by Ard Ri Cunga, and she slipped a pair of twins by a non Connemara stallion last christmas (2001). I have decided to cover her with the young stallion Rockfield McBurney.

I bought Hagens Ulina, Lina in 1999 from Hagens Stuteri. Lina has one foal, a two-year-old filly (2002), Doyher Troya by Spinway Corona. Lina is a very good riding pony and everybody loves her.

I bought Eiris Fairy Fiona (born 1997, by Ardnasillagh O'Flaherty 5C) in April 2001 from her breeder Jaana Lallo. Fiona is an adorable pony and I'm hoping to compete with her in dressage in the future. She should foal her first foal (by Rockfield McBurney 13C) in the beginning of July.
