Furbough Peggy IRE 910

The chestnut colour has never been common in the Connemara breed, but one of the major mare families in Sweden has its origin in a chestnut mare, Furbough Peggy, born in 2939. During the war the demand for a heavier pony increased and the CPBS experimented with having Irish Draught stallions available for Connemara mares. It never made a huge impact, but some of today's ponies can be traced back to the Irish Draught stallions that were used and among these are the ponies from Furbough Peggy's mare family. 1945 Peggy was covered by Skibbereen and the result was her only registered offspring, the daughter Furbough Lass.

Furbough Lass was the mother of ten offspring, seven daughters and three gelding sons. The oldest daughter Gloves Grey have offspring who have spread to large parts of Connemara Europe. In Germany we find the gelding Tempest who has been successful in gelding classes at the German Connemara shows and also in France, the Netherlands and the UK there have been descendants of Gloves Grey.

Another of Gloves Greys daughters was one of the earliest Swedish Connemara mares. Jasmin, originally called Flashlight, came to Sweden in 1965 as a two-year-old and had five offspring here. From Jasmin a string of performance ponies descends: Wänga Jehu in eventing, Will-With-a-Wisp competing in show jumping and cross country, Birkums Fanny, Maybe Forever and the Gotland part bred Eriks Camomill who all competed in show jumping and in dressage we have Fame II. Jeros Amber and her daughter Klara Kavat have both received a jumping award at the quality test.

Little Noreen Bawn, Gloves Greys daughter from 1969 gave rise to one of the family's sturdier branches in Ireland. From her we have Newtown Blossom, reserve champion at the 2010 All-Ireland Broodmare show. The Class 1 stallion Galloon Ceol was third at Clifden show as a two-year-old in 2008 and was reserve champion at the Cashel show the year after. Castleside JJ Junior had a fantastic year in 2007 when he won the loose jumping finals and the class for three-year-old stallions at Clifden show and he has made the top three at Clifden show during another three years. Another stallion from Little Noreen Bawn is Kilduffahoo II whose offspring have won or been highly placed both at Clifden show and in Germany. Little Noreen Bawn's granddaughter and JJ Junior's granddam, Scariff Lass, was exported to Finland where her daughter Symphatil Irish Queen was highly placed both at the pony breeders dressage class and at the Connemara national show. A final descendant of Gloves Grey worth mentioning is Dancing Lady, a daughter of Gloves Grey. She's the dam of Kippure Hazel, the 2004 champion at the Ballinalee show and of Crusader of Kippure who has won and been placed at Clifden show and Dublin Horse show and also done well in ridden classes in the UK.

Gloves Grey is registered as born 1958, just like her sister Kilbricken Kitty, but since Gloves Grey has Cill Ciarain as her sire and Kilbricken Kitty is registered by Tiger Gill, one of them must have been given the wrong birth year and should have been born in 1957 instead. Kilbricken Kitty was exported to the UK where she acquired the suffix Wisbridge to her name. In her book Calmore Days Susan Bowen writes about Kitty: "Then there was Kilbricken Kitty, chestnut roan, such a lovely warm colour lika tomato soup on a cold winters day and such a friend." Two of her daughters were exported to Sweden, Wisbridge Honeydew in 1965 and Grassguards Honeypot in 1966, one to Denmark, Calmore Grey Goose, and one to France, Calmore Buzzard.

Kitty's full sister Errigal Princess is an interesting name. Three of her six registered progeny made approved stallions of whom the oldest, Errigal Prince was perhaps the most successful. He won at Clifden show as a foal, as a yearling and as a two year old and he had successful daughters in the shape of Keoltown Muff and Ocean Sky, both highly placed at Clifden show.

1963 was a fantastic year for Errigal Princess as a brood mare. Not only did Errigal Prince win the yearling colt class, Princess' daughter Errigal Beauty also won the class for filly foals. Two years later Beauty was one of the foundation mares of Swedish Connemara breeding with her offspring at the Hummelbro stud. Beauty's descendants have done well, both as performance ponies and in the show ring. Hummelbro Boll was a successful show jumper during the 80ies and 90ies as was Hummelbro Boss during 1993. Hummelbro Ballerina and Hummelbro Barbie are both gold awarded in hand and Hummelbro Barbie was supreme champion at the 1978.

Beauty's oldest daughter, Hummelbro Bitte, is the dam of the approved stallion Fendth who was gold awarded in hand at several local shows and supreme champion at the Norr Malma local show in 1988. He is, however, perhaps best known for his excellent track record driven, both on his own with a Swedish championship medal, in pair and in a team of four. Among his offspring are several gold awarded ponies, the diploma mare Retsina, several successful driven ponies up to pony World championship level, Gibson with a movements award at the three-year-old test and Shannado competing in the European dressage championships.

Hummelbro Ballerina was one of the early brood mares at the Hagen stud. Her sons Hagens Gangster and Hagens Konjak have both competed successfully both in dressage and show jumping and Gangster was one of the better Swedish eventers during 1988, 1990 and 1991. Ballerina had her last foal at Hagen in 1985 and was thereafter exported to Finland where her daughter Hagelunds Indiana was the best Connemara at the 1992 national pony show.

The biggest impact has perhaps Hagens Ellina made as a brood mare at the Köhls stud. Her son Köhls Dahlin scored highly at his quality test both for movements and for jumping ability, and no less than five of Ellina's offspring has taken competition points in dressage. Köhls Evelina and Köhls Fidolina have been frequently placed during the last couple of years and have been among the best dressage Connemaras in Sweden. Fidolina has also been gold awarded at the national show. Also in subsequent generations we find many successful ponies among Ellina's descendants. In the show ring Köhls Polka has won at the national show and is gold awarded at a local show and Hagalyckans Breeze has a gold award from the 2005 national show and Legends Belle is a diploma mare. From the three-year-old test we find Hagalyckans Ophelia (movements), Belle's Supreme (jumping) and Daisy Bell (movements and jumping) all with awards. At quality tests Hagalyckans Choice, Köhls Igloo, Köhls Etik, Legends Aragorn, Legends Ariel and Legends Belle all have achieve a score above 8 for their jumping or movements talents. Legends Anastasia has competed in the young pony championships in show jumping and in the competition for "grown ups" Hagalyckans Choice has competed in dressage and Legends Aragorn, Legends Belle, Ekhagens Marco Polo and Ekhagens Miracle of Love all in show jumping. Köhls Reelina received her Elite premium in 2007 and at the last AGM she was given the Swedish Connemara society's Brood mare award for 2010. Her great granddaughter Blue Bell is exported to Germany.

A small, but interesting branch we find from Hummelbro Bikini, Beauty's next daughter. She had one daughter at Hagen, Hagens Chanel, who won her class at the 1981 national show with a modest 36 points, but the same year she also won the quality test class for five-year-old mares with foals. Her full brother, Genbäckens Musketör, had some success as a show jumper and also Chanel's sons Guvdalens Dominiq and Kärnhults Napoleon have been successful show jumpers. A third brother, Gruvdalens Bobo, won his class at the national show as a three-year-old and could in 2011 be seen in the veteran class of the national show, still going strong.

Hummelbro Barbie was Errigal Beauty's 1973 foal and she too gave rise to a branch of the family where we can find many performance ponies. Fabian II had a movements award at his three-year-old test and also scored highly for movements as a four-year-old at the quality test. Akilles II (dressge), Amadeuz (show jumping and dressage) Net Nice (show jumping), Nett-Nick (show jumping) and Janicia (show jumping) all have won competition points. Janicia is furthermore a diploma mare and Busan Bamsie, Janicia, Rollexia and Hollywood Barbie Q have all been gold awarded at local shows and Ceasar IV is gold awarded at the national show. Janicia's daughter Jeros Jingle Bell is exported to Germany.

Our last Swedish connection in the Furbough Peggy mare family we find in Furbough Lass' daughter Lambay Joy who came to Sweden in 1966. With three daughters her branch of the family was never particularly large in Sweden. Her daughter Råcksta Monette had only two daughters and only one of them, Dimanche, had any foal and she only one. Her daughter Dilona is, however, the dam of Legends Arwen who with her 72 show jumping points in 2010 and 28 show jumping points in 2011 with clear rounds at national competitions doesn't have to be ashamed of herself. At the time of writing she has already started gathering competition points for 2012 and has won a regional competition over 1 m. Maybe after completing her competition career she will be the one to bring also this branch of the Furbough Peggy family to the next generation.
