Furnace Lass IRE 366

Windy was born in 1940 and was by Heather Bell out of the mare Furnace Lass whos only other daughter left no registred progeny. Windy had several successful visits in the show ring. In 1950 she won the RDS silver medal for older mares at the Clifden show. In 1958 she was runner up for the mare championship and at the Royal Dublin Society's spring show she was at 21 years of age fourth in a class for mare six years and older. But it is not as a winner in the show ring, but as a brood mare Windy has made the biggest impact. Her first registred foal was born in 1947 and was followed by another eleven, nine mares, a stallion and a gelding.

As a ten year old, after two daughters who only left minor contributions to the stud book, Windy gave birth to one of her most important daughters, Windy Rebel. She was by Lavalley Rebel and became a foundation mare at the Mervyn stud. As a ten year old Windy Rebel was secon in the class for six years and older mares at the RDS spring show and she won her class in 1954 and was second again the following year, but, like her dam, she has been most successful as a brood mare.

Windy Rebel's oldest daughter, Mervyn Nasim, was one of only a handful ponies in the Connemara stud book sired by Naseel, and she was thus a half sister to the stallion Clonkeehan Auratum. She was, like her dam, a brood mare at the Mervyn stud and gave birth to the two Clifden winners Mervyn Wren and the stallion Mervyn Pookhaun. Mervyn Wren continued the tradition of successful broodmareship at the Milford stud and a long line of Clifden winners descend from her. Derry Playboy, best gelding in 1550; best filly foal in 199; Milford Wren reserv champion form ponies in Connemara in 1991; foal champion in 1992; Gentle Mac, best colt foal in 1993 and Ballacurra Beauty, best mare without foal at foot at the british breed show in 1999 all descend from Mervyn Wren. Add to this Slisneoir, sire of among others the 1995 youngstock and reserve champion and Gentle Wren, reserve youngstock champion in 1998 and youngstock and reserve champion in 1999 and you'll have a group that is hard to beat and then many good ponies have been left out. In Sweden we have Ballybawn Hughie who's competed in show jumping with success during the new millennium. Mervyn Pookhaun is in Sweden perhaps best known as the sire of the Danish Elite mare Milford Mistress, dam of the stallion Öxenholm M.A.S.H.

After two foals by Naseel Windy Rebel had another four by Camlin Cicada. The oldest of these was the stallion Mervyn Storm, sire of among many others the Danish stallion Hamlet of Oakleigh, Houndswood Girl class 1 mare and supreme championin Denmar, and the German Elite mare Golden Harvest. The next foal, Mervyn Mayfly, has done her best to make sure she's not far behind her sister Nasim. Among her decendants are many good things like the stallion Mervyn Grey Monkey, champion stallion in Germany 1977 and the father of Boden Park Maythors, supreme champion at the 1973 Clifden show; Milford Hurricane, Clifden champion in 1977 and later exported to Lesotho to improve the native pony breed there; Lanburn Lacewing winner of the yearling filly class at the 1992 British breed show and her brother Lanburn Lieutenant, winner of the 1998 class for 5-6 year old stallions.

The foals Windy Rebel had after Mervyn Mayfly did not found as big branches of the family as her previous offspring, but they have none the less left plenty of successful ponies. The son Mervyn Invicta is a registred stallion and sire of the Danish class 1 mare Inish Rogan. The daughter Mervyn West Wind is the dam of Mervyn Sea Breeze who was exported to the Netherlands and recieved a "ster" award ther, while Sea Breeze's brother Mervyn Nor'Wester has competed in both show jumping and dressage in Sweden. Most successful have Mervyn Blue Charm been though. Her daughter, Mervyn Blue Tac, won the inaugural ridden class at the RDS spring show and had previously been placed in hand as a two year old. A son of Blue Tac's, Cú na Mara, has been in the ribbons in the gelding classes at Clifden show. Blue Charms most famous offspring must, however, without doubt be Mervyn Kingsmill. He was one of only four foals by Atlantic Cliff in Ireland, the other three, including Mervyn Nor'Wester, were gelded. Kingsmill was subscribing on wins and high placings at Clifden show dyring the 1980-ies and won his class five times. He proved to be even more valuable as a sire of a long line of winners, Dooneen Castle, Jennifer Rose, Village Boy, Castle Dame, Maureen's Cuckoo and Village Colleen to mention some Irish Clifden winners. Outside of Ireland we also have the in Britain successfully competing stallion Golden Star, the Finnish Ard Ri Cunga and in Sweden Hillside Star II.

Windy Dun was born in 1954 and was by Dun Lorenzo. Her two years older full sister Windy Greyling was exported to the USA, but doesn't seem to have been used for breeding there. Windy Dun on the other hand proved her worth back in Ireland. Her oldes daughter, Western Wind was exported to Britain and became a brood mare at the Aylesland stud. There she became the mother of among others Aylesland Summer Shower and Aylesland Silver Sable, who in Denmark founded the Nicholas stud. From them descends the approved stallion Nicholas Stormy Weather, the Swedish export and dressage pony Nicholas Conn the Black, the Finnish export and champion mare Gigi Egely, class 1 mare Bunely's Freja and Camilea gold awarded at last years Danish quality test. Other sons of Summer Shower's and Silver Sable's had a somewhat more unusual career as circus ponies performing a liberty program together.

Aylesland Silver Velvet made a longer journey than her two sisters and became a brood mare at the Barwidgee stud in Australia. There she gave birth to Barwidgee Snowdown who in 1976 was supreme champion Galloway, i.e. a horse of about 140 - 150 cms high, at the Hobart Royal Show. Another of Silver Velvet's sons, Barwidgee Samite, sired Rupari Ronan who was champion at a south Australian show in 1993. From Barwidgee Silver Velvet's descendants have also spread to other Australian and also New Zealand studs.

Windy Dun's second daughter, Julie, is best known in Sweden as the dam of the stallion Tulira Highball and thus grandmother of performance ponies such as Hagens Kaliber, Hagens Label, Mandela (eventing), Hagens Lorenzo, Hagens Quigley (dressage), Mirage II (show jumping) and Aramara Banshee Bell, best competing Connemara in Finland 1995. Tulira Highball is also the sire of the elite and reserve champion mare Hagens Kathleen and a long list of diploma mares and quality test winners. Apart from Highball Jullie was also the dam of the stallion Tulira Colman. After coming loose at the Ponies of Britain show one year and thoroughly embarrased himself he was exported to Australia and the Barwidgee stud. He sired the above mentioned Snowdown and was the grandsire of the thoroughbred cross Sudden Impact who was shortlisted for the Australian eventing team at the Los Angeles olympics, but who sadly was prevented from taking part by lameness. Through the daughters Tulira Rosheen and Tulira June, Julie is also represented in Britain, Switzerland and France.

Windy June, a full sister of Western Wind, was born in 1963 and among her descandants as well many a good thing can be found. From Windy Joy we have Silver Storm, approved stallion by the Swedish Dale Haze. He started his career by winning the yearling colt class at Clifden and was later exported to France where he was the sire of the 2002 breed show reserve champion mare, Astuce de la Belle. Silver Storm's full sister Margaret is the dam of Rosscastle Kippure Heather who won the class for 6-7 year old mares at Clifden las year. Windy Day has been a successful stallion in Ireland and sired Easter Trixie, class winner in 1995 and 1998, and Fionn Mac Cunhaill who was champion ridden pony last year at Clifden. Windy Day's half sister Windy Beauty was champion at the Austrian breed show in 1993. From another Windy June daugher, Windy Winsome, we have Invering Lady, class winner at the 2001 Clifden show, and dutch stallion Anders van de Leliaard, and from Windy Rose we have Gingernut, swedish show jumper.

The year after Windy June the next successful Windy Dun daughter was born. Windy Cove is in Sweden best known for her oldest daughter Windy Cove Ladyfriend. Ladyfriend has been a very successful brood mare in Sweden. She has herself been gold awarded several times with a champion title from the 1985 local show in Umeå as the cream of the cake. Her offspring has proved to be good performers. The stallion Myrens Wilbur has sired the dressage pony Willes Cayenne and several diploma mare and gold awarded ponies and has also competed dressage himself if not as successfully as his half brother Dale Wind who as a silver from the 1998 Swedish championships as his finest award. Dale Aurora was gold awarded at the 1995 national show and her daughter Dale Windrose has several gold awards from her showing days and has also competed show jumping as well as dressage and eventing. Ladyfriend's second oldest daughter, Ofelia, was exported to Finland, but not before having to prominent dressage ponies in Sweden, Desirita and Enterprise, who have competed in the European Championships and who was the highest ranking dressage ponies, all breeds, in 1986.

Windy Cove's other offspring have been successful as well. Windy Cove Chum was exported to France and was champion at the French breed show in 1976. Her oldes daughter Holy followed in her mother's hoof prints and was reserve champion 20 years later. A son of Holy's, Quimper III, sired the 2002 champion foal Ogham du Sorian. Windy Cove has also had a large impact through her sons. Windy Cove Ranger is the sire of the successful French stallion Idenoir as well as Cheviot Bryony, reserve champion at the 1977 British breed show. Cove Commander has among his offspring Oopalind du Thuit and Blizar du Thuit, both French successful performance ponies, and also May Prince, winner of the 1975 Clifden yearling colt class. Finnian Leader lead a quiet life in Britain, but his daughter Middleton Tinkerbelle was champion foal in 1981. Moy Hazy Cove on the other hand has had his share of successful offspring in Ireland. He seems to have been subscribin on the foal championship by bein the sire of the champion foals in 1991, 1997 and 2000 and the reserve champion foal in 2003. Add to this numerous successful youngstock and adult ponies and Charlie Chaplin, last year's second most successful eventing Connemara in Germany.

Windy's seventh daughter, Windy Spring was a dull sister of the successful stallion Rebel Wind. Rebel Wind was his sister's two years junior and must be considered to be one of the great ones in the Connemara breed. He is guilty of such famous ponies as Roundstone River, reserve champion at the 1972 Clifden show and champion two years later; Commin Market, Brittish super premium mare; April, successful brood mare in the Netherlands; the Swedish stallions Curragh Colm and Clifden Wind; Spiddal Rose, gold awarded in Sweden and of course Marble, champion both at Clifden and the international shows at Roskilde and Vetlanda 1977 and 1979 respectively.

But back to Windy Spring. She was born in 1958 ans won the filly foal class of that year. She haf her first registred daughter in 1963. Windy Winter, asn the duaghter was known, was exported to Sweden and became a broodmare at the Liljegården stud. Her daughters Liljegårdens Honey, Liljegårdens Irina and Liljegårdens Zerola have all competed in show jumping. Zerola was later exported to Norway whil Honey and her half sister Fleur gave life as brood mares a try. Honey was shown in 1983 at a local show and could go home with a gold medal and an honourable second place.

Windy Morning, another daughter of Windy Spring, is the dam of Windy Ross and the grand dam of Wild West Charly who has been a most successful eventing pony in Germany. Las year he was fourth in the German championships and Germanys most successful eventing Connemara, beating the above mentioned Charlie Chaplin. This year he was part of the German team for the European championships and won a team gold being placed seventh individually.

Windy Mountain, the next daughter in line was runner up for the title of best pony owned in Connemara at the 1976 Clifden show. She is the dam of Mirah Champion, who won the two year old colt class in 1979, and Seafield Silver Dun who won the yearling colt class four years later. Western Wind, another of Windy Mountains offspring, and not to be confused with the Western Wind mentioned above, was exported to Sweden where he has been show jumping. Through her daughter Windy Sunshine, Windy Spring is also grand dam of Booreen Rouge, runner up to the ridden championship at the 1995 Clifden show and winner of the gelding class the following year. His half brother, the stallion Windy's Boy, is the sire of the British stallion Glencarrig Bobby who has qualified for the yealy ridden Mountain and Moorland championshop at Olympia ans their sister Windy Glimmer has enriched Sweden with her son Son of Kingsmill.

Windy continued to have quality foal all throughout her life. Her daughter Ard Zephyr was born in Windy's 25th year and won the class for mares seven years and older at the 1974 Clifden show. During the winter of 1966-67 Windy was again in foal, but slipped her foal and died herself. Zephyr was the last of a long line of successful offspring of Windy, and the mare family Windy gave rise to must surely be one of the most successful. Branch after branch have proved their worth over and over again and surely Windy's descendants will continue to produce top class ponies also in the future.
