Lady Jane IRE 455

Going through the Connemara litterature there's not much to read about Lady Jane. The stud book says born in 1927, grey, 13.3 hh. About one of her daughters, Cregg Lassie, and her descendants there are far more to read. Another branch coming from Lady Jane's oldest daughter has not recieved the same attention, but there's no reason to skip Ridge Grey.

Born in 1946, when her dam was already 19, Ridge Grey had four daughters, two of which have registred progeny. The oldest of these, Grey Steel, has a daughter, Easter Bonnet, in the Netherlands and a son, Toomard Tim, in the same country. She also has a daughter, Clondoyle Princess, in France. Princess's great grand son, Kalimero de Mairy, was third in the French six-year-old championships in 2004. Grey Steel has also four Irish sons where Gentian Rebel Tim's son Bell Boy has done well in the Clifden Show gelding classes and his daughter Winter Holly has been exported to Sweden. Ridge Grey's second younges daughter, Rocket, is perhaps betterknown in Swededn. As a side note she is the grand dam of the above mentioned Bell Boy who thus goes back to Ridge Grey on both sides, but it is as the grand dam of another pony, Roundstone Blondie, that we know her in Sweden.

Blondie was imported in 1971, as a two-year-old, by the Brolöten stud, and she remained there as a brood mare throughout her lide. As a four year old she won her class at the breed show with a gold, but it is as aborrd mare she has the greatest claim to fame. A total of 18 foals have given her the Swedish Connemara society's brood mare award and an Elite premium. Among her offspring are the approved stallion Brolötens Onyx, also a successfull dressage pony during the 80-ieas and 90-ies. Also Brolötens Baryt (dressage and show jumping), Brolötens Because (dressage), Brolötens Brut (eventing and show jumping), Brolötens Dogger (show jumping) och Brolötens Ortit (eventing and show jumping) have been successful performance ponies. In the in hand show ring Onyx and Ortit have been awarded silver. In the following generation the competition genes can be found in the show jumpers Ortega, daughter of Ortit, Brezzi's Bobina, daughter of Breccia and Mr Pablo, son of Brezzi's Bobina.

If Ridge Grey's branch of the family has been a little anonymous internationally, this can hardly be said for Cregg Lassie. Cregg Lassie was born in 1950 and was entered into the stud book at seven years of age after having failed as a three year old. What a luck she was allowed a second chance. She has no pedigree recorded, but Pat Lyne tells in her Shrouded in Mist how her pedigree was revealed at a later stage and that she was out of Lady Jane. At the age of 16 she was fourth at Clifden show, the only time she was in the ribbons there, but from the Oughterard show she is said to rarely have returned without a rosette.

Cregg Lassie's oldest daughter, Lassie Doon, was exported to the USA where she had a couple of foals at the Oak Hills stud. Her one year younger full sister, Betsy Bay, stayed in Ireland and became a successful brood mare. Her oldest daughter, Brigitte, made a name for herself in her new country Denmark, first as a class 1 mare at the inspections, later as an elite mare. Brigitte's daughter Holens Bess is likewise a class 1 mare and the mother of the performance ponies Majgaardens Peacock (show jumping and eventing) and Surprice (dressage) and the stallion Majgaardens Killian, who is the sire of among others the Swedish dressage stallion Pilgaards Killroy and the Swedish jumping ponies Irish Golden Star, Kirstinelunds Denise and Mosegårdens Kastor all born in Denmark. A daughter of Holens Beth, Majgaardens Beth, is the mother of Hedehusets Bonn-Roa, foal champion in Jylland in 1991 and grandmother of the stallion Hedehusets Mulgatavny who was approved last year.

The next daughter of Brigitte is if possible even more famous than her mother. At the international show at Roskilde in 1977 the mare champion was Öxenholm Bardot, a title she also took at the international show at Vetlanda in 1979. In 1977 she was reserve champion and in 1979 reserve Best In Show and at the 1981 international Roskilde show she went one step further and won the supreme championship. She was inspected as a class 1 mare and became an elite mare like her mother. Among her offspring are the class 1 mares Öxenholm Barley Sugar, Öxenholm Beauty Spot (exported to Norway), Öxenholm Bouchette and Öxenholm Gin Gin as well as the eventing gelding Öxenholm Baron. Beauty Spot is in turn the dam of the class 1 mares Öxenholm Bush Baby (also exported to Norway) and Öxenholm Bumble Bee and the dressage pony Busy Butler. Also Bush Baby is the mother of a class 1 mare, Öxenholm Blunder, the fifth generation class 1 mare, who also was Best In Show in Bornholm 1990 and is grandmother to the 2003 foal champion at the same place, AC-Betti Woman af Engvang. Bush Baby is also the mother of two approved stallions, the Danish Öxenholm Hawkeye and the Norwegian Pålands Bajas.Öxenholm Bumble Bee became a brood mare at the Kildesgård stud where she was the dam of the show jumper Kildesgårds Bartolin and the 1995 Bornholm foal champion, Kildesgårds Balthazar.

Bardot's next daughter Öxenholm Bouchette has like her sister Beauty Spot had successful offspring. Elmely's Jasmin and Hyldens Peach are both class 1 mares. Jasmin was chosen best pony at the 2003 inspection and Peach was reserve Best In Show in Zealand in 1999 and 2001. Peach's daughter Elmelys Riverdance is also a Class 1 mare as is another Bouchette grand daughter Bredemadgårds Cilla out of Hyldens Primula.

Two years after Bardot, Brigitte had her next daughter, Öxenholm Barbara. Like her big sister and so many of her relatives she was a class 1 mare. In 1979 she was exported to Sweden where she eventually became an Elite mare for her success as a brood mare. She's the dam of the diploma mare Bikini who also has been gold awarded at a breed show. Bikini's two full brothers Baron Roy and Bernadino has been competing successfully in Show jumping, dressage and eventing. Barbara's daughter Brigitte was like har mother a brood mare. She's the mother of the diploma mares Baronesse and Because and Baronesse has alsobeen gold awarded at the breed shwo and was youngstock champion in 1995. Another daughter, Benedetti, was gold awarded at the 2001 local show at Ängelholm. Also the following generations of this family have their diploma mares in the form of Baronesse's granddaughter Önnarps Katalina and the Brigitte-daughter Barbara's (that is Öxenholm Barbaras grand daughter) daughter Baronessan.

Öxenholm Barbara's full sister Öxenholm Buttercup was two years younger than her and a class 1 mare too. Her most successful offspring is the son Öxenholm Burglar who has competed successfully in show jumping and eventing. Of the other Brigitte offspring Öxenholm Boom is the best known in Sweden. He was imported as a yearling as a stallion prospect but didn't reach all the way. Instead ha had a career as a dressage pony being among the top ten Connemaras in Sweden 1989-93. In 1992 he was at the top of the list and the year before the eigth best of all breeds. He crowned his carreer with a gold at the 1992 Swedish championships.

The next Betsy Bay daughter and Brigitte's full sister, all Betsy Bay's offspring was by Brigde Boy, was Brenda of Oakleigh. She came to Denmark via Great Britain and she became a brood mare at the Lykkesholm stud. Her most successful offspring is perhaps Lykkesholm Parma, Class 1 mare and brood mare at the Nörlund stud. There Parma became the mother of among others Nörlunds Certain, foal champion in Jylland in 1996 and best gelding in 2002. Parma's foals seems to have subscribed on champion titles and Nörlunds Pauline was foal champion in 1998 and Nörlunds Pasadena was reserve champion in 2000. Nörlunds Pacific Queen and Nörlunds Pretty Woman are both class 1 mares. Nörlunds Pretty Woman has also done well as a brood mare and is the mother to of among others Dambaeksgårds Pasha Pall who was best gelding at the 2003 Zealand inspections. Another daughter of Brenda of Oakleigh, Lykkesholm Flossie, is the dam of Altmarks Georgina who's competed successfully in both dressage and show jumping.

In 1968 had the daughter Boogie Woogie who further spread the family abroad. Her daughter Atlantic Myth went to the Netherlands. Boogie Woogie's grand daughter Atlantic Blue Moon, out of Atlantic Moonbeam, went to Great Brittain, while both Boogie Woogie and Atlantic Moonbeam went to France. Boogie Woogie was champion at the 1978 and 1979 Oursieres show and in France she's the mother of among others the stallions Power Boy du Parc and Quignon du Parc. The next Betsy Bay daughter was Betsy Dun who became a brood mare in the UK at the Hookey stud. In 1979 she won the class for mares without foals at foot at the Brittish breed show. Among her progeny are the gelding Hookey Bezique who has competed successfully while the daughter Hookey Queen B went to the northernmost part of Brittain as a brood mare on Orkney.

Returning to Cregg Lassie, Betsy Bay was followed by three foals by Carna Dun. The oldest, Coosheen Petronella has made her contribution to the Coosheen stud. Her daughter Coosheen Samba has done well in the show ring with victories at the Clifden show as a two- as well as four-year-old, and in 1982 she was reserve champion at the Royal Dublin Show. As a broodmare she's the dam of the Brittish stallion Coosheen Samson. A daughter of Petronella, Tango, was also exported to the UK and had foals at the Lanburn stud. Also Petronella's younger sister, Cregg Lily, has left descendants in the UK through her daughter Canrower Nicola and Canrower Judy. Last in the trio by Carna Dun was the stallion Little Joe. He was third in the stallion class at the 1979 Clifden show and had both a career as a grade A show jumper and a racing pony and contributed to his owner's income through his victories as well as stud fees. Unfortunately he covered few Connemara mares, but more thoroughbreds and ponies with unknown breeding. Two of his purebred daughters, however, went to the Netherlands, the full sisters Dun Maeve and Dunamoon, ster premium mare and champion at the 1976 Dutch breed show respectively. 1966, after three foals by Bridge Boy, Cregg Lassie returned to Carna Dun and had his last daughter by him, Cregg Sally, whose daughter, Sally Forth, who was exported to the USA.

Of the remaining Cregg Lassie foals all but one was by Bridge Boy. The youngest daughter, Cregg Comrade, was foal champion at the 1970 Clifden show while two of her other foals went to Sweden. The daughter Cregg Hazel had a foal in 1969, but was never entered into the Swedish studbook and I haven't found much more about her. The son Cregg Hero is a bit more known though not a huge name of the breed. He was shown at a local show in 1970 winning with a silve award. Among his offspring are silver awarded Genbäckens Juvel, the show jumper Amanda and the dressage pony Christian L. Myself, I have a lot to thank Cregg Hero, and through him Cregg Lassie as well, for. In the mid 80-ies Cregg Hero's son Gregory convinced me I wanted to start riding at a riding school. There I got to know another Connemara and was soon convinced this was the breed for me, but that's a whole other story...
