Lettershask IRE 771

Lettershask was one of Noble Star's many daughters, born in 1940 and registred as roan. Given her sire's colour I wonder if she may not rather have been grey, but neither of her three daughters is registred as either grey nor grey, so who knows. The oldest of Lettershask's daughters was Evening Pearl. The observant stud book reader will note that she too has 1940 as her birth year. Hardly likely, so somewhere along the line there has been an error, although it matters little seventy years on. Evening Pearl had five daughters, the oldest of which is Morning Pearl. She had in turn a stallion son, exported to the Netherlands, and three daughters of which Moy Lovely Pearl of Abbeyleix was the most successful.

Moy Lovely Pearl was a brood mare at the Abbeyleix stud and most of her progeny there was exported. Abbeyleix Pearl was sold to the UK and the Llandegvedd stud. Her full sister Abbeyleix Pearl Necklace was exported to France where she became a brood mare at the Seye and Preuil studs. Her son Bestman du Preuil was a successful dressage pony who participated in the European championships and was second in the French during his most successful year, 2003. The next sister out of Moy Lovely Pearl, the half sister Abbeyleix Pearl Grey, stayed in Ireland, but her daughter Abbeyleix Pink Pearl followed her aunt to the UK. Here she became the mother of the stallion Llandegvedd Rafferty, who as yearling won his class at the British breed show and he was reserve champion at the West Midland Stallion Show for three years running, but does not seem to have had that many offspring. Pink Pearl is also the dam of the gelding Lintavon Ciro who has been very successful in ridden classes and has qualified for the ridden class final at Olympia twice. Abbeyleix Grey Pearl, another full sister of Pearl and Pearl Grey, was exported to Australia, but I know little about her offspring at the Ballabtrae stud there. Irish born Magic Moment did, however, go to Germany where she won the class for older mares at the south Germany show in 1995. Magic Moments sister Grey Pearl stayed in Ireland, but her granddaughter, Annilaun Sweet Jessie was exported to Poland and took part in the European eventing championships in both 2004 and 2005.

The earliest born Connemara in the Swedish stud book is Errislannon Pearl, Evening Pearls daughter fom 1958. She had several foals before coming to Sweden and one of them was, like her mother exported to Sweden. Bushypark Pearl as she was known, came here two years ahead of her mother. Among her decendants are Princess II who competed successfully in show jumping during most of the eighties. Other comptetition ponies are Nickolette with show jumping merits and the multitalents Saruman and Simone who have been successful in show jumping as well as eventing and dressage. Simone was also eight on the ranking of dressage Connemaras and fifth on the ranking for eventing Connemaras in 1994. We also have Önnarps Amaretto with steady dressage successes during the first part of this decade and show jumping points from 2006 and Binnas Dajm with show jumping points from 1998. Among the younger ponies are Önnarps Nickette and Önnarps Orcan with dressage awards at the three-year-old test and Önnarps Ivanhoe with both jumping and dressage awards.

On the in-hand side of things you will again find Nickolette who has been gold awarded at several breed shows and is the dam of Önnarps Babette. Babette has like her dam several gold awards from breed shows and is also a diploima mare, just like Tosca. We also have Gipsy Queen, another diploma mare and dam of the stallion Aladdin. Aladdin has several gold awards from the breed show and local shows and a Best in Show title from the 2007 local show at Ängelholm and a gold for his progeny group at last years local show in Åstorp. Aladdin has also had a short performance carreer with successes in both show jumping and eventing. Among his progen are Önnarps Babette (who is thus line bred to her grand and great grandmother Möllans Nanette) and Önnarps Shamrock, both youngstock champions at the breed show and Bränntomts Julius who was reserve youngstock champion. Aladdin is also the sire of a number of ponies with awards, mainly dressage awards, from three-year-old tests, several diploma mares, Elite premium mare Önnarps Dee-Dee, Önnarps Juvel who has won the young pony championships in show jumping and several older successfully competing ponies.

Among the Swedish-born daughters of Errislannon Pearl, we find Golden Pearl. She was never entered in the Swedish stud book, but had two foals by Conundrum of Millfields who have both competed successfully: Golden Boy in show jumping and Sunrice in dressage. Another daughter of Errislannon Pearl's, Amanda, competed in show jumping during the first half of the eighties. Her daughter Julia II followed in her mother's hoof prints and became a show jumping pony too, like Amanda's partbred daughter Malou Pearl who have also evented.

In 1960 Evening Pearl had heer next daugher, Evening Rainbow. She was in turn the dam of the mare Moy Heather who was exported to the UK and became a brood mare at the Shipton stud. In 1976 she visited the Brittish breed show, won her class and was brood mare champion and reserve overall champion. One daughter, Shipton Kate O'Mara has done well in the British Performance Award Scheme and been top ten twice in a row. Her sister Shipton Evening Twilight has a son, Peniarth Jackpot who has also made top ten. As a piece of trivia, in 1987 Moy Heather gave pair of surviving twins Shipton Topsy Twin and Shipton Turvey Twin.

Next Evening Pearl did her best to supply the Netherlands with Connemara ponies. I have found a daughter, two granddaughters and two great granddaughters who seem to have made the journey to the land of tulips and clogs. In addition there's another granddaughter, Dream of Tully, by Silver King of Aughanure, who have been awarded a "ster" award in the Netherlands. Evening Pearl's daughter Lucky Pearl, however, was exported to France where she gave rise to a lively branch of the family. France has a substantial Connemara population, but I always find it difficult to find information regarding the ponies there. Never the less I've found two stallions from Lucky Pearl's family; Corail out of Milady de la Dive and Cindy de la Dive out of Irish Pearl, who both seem to have served at the state stud Haras Nationaux if I've understood correctly. Lucky Pearl is also the dam of two privately owned stallions, Bryan de la Dive and Dream de la Dive and Gipsy de la Dive is the dam of the privately owned stallion Jasmin de Vilfin. In an information sheet for Cindy de la Dive I have found some codes I believe records competition results, both for the offspring of Cindy and for other descendants of Irish Pearl, but I do not know how to interpret them. However, I have found that Cindy's daughter L'Or de l'Aulne won her class at the 2007 French breed show.

To continue with Lettershask's next daughter we instead turn to Brown Alice. Her oldest daughter Alibel, has just a small branch of the family, but there's a French export among her descendants. The next daughter, Francie Alice, has left a larger branch of the family. She was sold to the UK from where her oldest daughter Cocum Lindy Lou left for Sweden. Among her offspring is Madicken, winner of the veterans clas at the 1989 breed show, but Cocum Lindy Lou is perhaps best known for her nickname "Lofty" which also became the name of her owner's stud. Another Swedish connection from Francie Alice is Millfield Silver Playboy. He came to Sweden as a stallion but was never approved in Sweden. In spite of this he had a few mares and his daughter Golden Shamrock was one of the very first ponies to participate in quality test.

Also the next daughter of Brown Alice, Careless Nora, had a daughter who was exported to Sweden. Atlantic Noreen had two foals here, but I haven't found anything further about them. Among Atlantic Noreen's sisters we find among others two Dutch exports and Swift Sally whos granddaughter Glenside lady won her class at the 2004 Clifden show and was third in 2007. A full sister of Glenside Ldy who's name I have been unable to find was second as a yearling and third as a two-year-old. Yet another granddaughter of Swift Sally, but this time out of Fancy Phyllis, is Nire Valley Kestrel who won her class at the Dublin Horse Show two years in a row, and was second at Clifden. We can also find Swedish connections in Swift Sally's son Royal Rocket who was imported here and has competed successfully during the majority of 2000ies.

Careless Nora has two full sisters. The oldest, Wistful Alice went through the UK to the Netherlands (where the Lettershask family really has been very well supported). There she was the dam of Dun Alice who was youngstock champion and best pony born in the Netherlands at their 1976 breed show. Careless Nora's and Wistful Alice's full sister Dolan Alice is in Sweden perhaps best known as the dam of Moy Alice, imported to Sweden in 1970. She had ten foals at the Sundsta stud and most of them have been succssful performance ponies: Sundsta Klio, Sundsta Pales, Sundsta Porgy and Sundsta Terpischore in show jumping. Sundsta Grim compeded both in show jumping and in dressage and Sundsta Mini Moy in show jumping and eventing. Sundsta Pales was the seventh best show jumping Connemara in 1989. In the show ring Mini Moy has been gold awarded. Also the next generation has competed successfully: Sundsta Thalia in dressage, Sundsta Bess in show jumping and Pallas in both dressage and show jumping. Thalia and Pallas have also both been awarded strong silvers in the show ring.

Dolan Alice had yet another foal in Ireland, Ali McGraw who was exported to France. I don't know much about her progeny there, but a granddaughter, Nikita Thibergere, has ben sold to the UK where she's done well in ridden classes. Dolan Alice herself was sold to the USA and from what I've found she had two sons there who were both gelded.

From the nest daughter of Brown Alice's, My Suzanne the hoofprints, through the daughter Lady Sue and the granddaughter Sue, goes to Germany. Sue's daughter Snowfly is a Stats Premium mare and the dam of the stallion Sternbergs Larry Junior, who is now approved in Denmark. Another daughter of My Suzanne is Cushatrough Anna, the dam of Templebready Woodmist, yet another ster mare in the Netherlands. Her daughter Maguirestables Water Fairy was foal champion at the 2001 Dutch breed show. My Suzanna's full sister, Emlough Dawn has a gelding son, Crack of Dawn, exported to the UK where he's been shown successfully in hand and Working Hunter Pony classes. A daughter of Emlough Dawnis yet another Dutch export: Black Marble who is the dam of Twinkle Star van Graaf Janshof who not only has a ster premium, but also a keur premium awarded to the best ster mares four years and older.

I haven't been able to find much information regarding the rest of Lettershask's descendants. I should, however, mention Lambay Alice, daughter of Brown Alice, who has given rice to a French branch of the family. Also Lettershask's last daughter, Lettershask Lade, deserves a mention for her part in spreading the family across the globe. Her daughter Drumconrath Holly was exported to France and gave rise to yet another branch of the family there. Before going there she had two foals in Ireland. One, Drumconrath Ivy followed her mother to France, the other Drumconrath Woody, made the long journey to Australia to be a brood mare at the Shelford Downs stud. I think the Lettershask family must be one of the most widely spread families with branches in most of the countries where Connemaras are being bred today.
