Molly Conneely IRE 562

If you pick up the fifth volume of the Irish stud book and look up number 562 you will find Molly Conneely. Grey, 13.2 hh over the withers and born in 1938 she's one of some 60 daughters to Silver Pearl. Silver Pearl's stallion line has no male descendants today, but through his many daughters he's well represented among the Connemara genes of today.

Molly Conneely has three daughters registred in the stud book. The oldest, Star of Fahy, was born in 1950 and has had some influence on the Swedish Connemara breeding. Her oldest son Knockranny Ruby was a registred stallion in Ireland and had a number of offspring there before being exported to Sweden in 1968. He was never approved in Sweden and had only a handful of foals. The Swedish-born daughter Fanny had some show jumping success in the 80-ies, but better known are his Irish-born daughters Moy Nancy and Moycullen Mist, both Elite mares. Moycullen Mist was also awarded the Swedish Connemara society brood mare award iin 1988

The next of Star of Fahy's progenies also came to Sweden. Easter Fahy was one of the early imports to Sweden. She came to Sweden already in 1966 and was entered in the Swedish stud book the following year with number 11. In 1977 she was shown at a local show and awarded a silver. Of her progeny, the gelding Kavat has competed successfully in dressage. The daughters She's a Fahy and Alexandra were both exported to Finland where they each had a couple of foals. Easter Fahy's daughters has been breeding in Sweden as well. Golden Fahy is the dam of the gold awarded Liljegårdens Elixir and Golden Diamond, a successful dressage pony who was among the top ten dressage Connemaras in Sweden 1989 - 1991. In 1990 he was also among the top ten ponies of all breeds, and the year after he took a bronze medal in the Swedish dressage championships for category C pponies. From Easter Fahy's daughter Virginia there's another branch of the family. Her daughter Iowa is among others the dam of the show jumping Clarion and Okay Ciwi, dam of the diploma mare Okay Bambi.

Star of Fahy's daughter Star of Lisbeg seems to have made her way to France where she has a some offspring. The next daughter, Tulira Mavourneen, on the other hand stayed in Ireland. She was on of the last foals by Tooreen Ross and had a successful show-ring career with wins at Clifden both as a yearling and as a two-year-old and highly placed in the class for mares seven years later on. In 1978 Mavourneen was the one to bring home the championship title at Clifden show. Mavourneen's daughter, Tulira Macushla, was the dam of Tulira Maggie, who did well in the Brittish Performance Award Scheme. Maggie's son Castle Beau Geste was exported to the USA where he was five times the Supreme Breed Champion at the West Coast Connemara show and three times performance champion among his titles. In 2007 he was given the An Tostal award which is awarded for lifetime achievement as a performing stallion and sire of performing offspring. Among his offspring is the successful show jumping pony, So Much To Do. Maggie's daughter Tina travelled in the opposite direction and has a couple of foals registred in Austria. Another Macushla daughter, Siobhan, is in France the mother of Iratu Varagnac who has been among the top ten eventing ponies in the country, and in Ireland Siobhan's son Kilmullen Fionn took part in the 1997 performance test. Another descendant of Mavourneen is the stallion New Beginnings, himself third at Clifden show in 1984 and the sire of Clifden winners like Dangan Cailín and Grey Rock Tina and competition ponies like Tulira Strongbow in Britain and Aille Clondie in USA.

Star of Fahy had more daughters with the Tulira prefix. Tulira Kathleen was exported to Spain. Tulira Charm was the dam of the French export Tulira Cracker Jack, sire of among others the part bred Jackie la Puce Mahoud, who was ranked among the top ten eventing ponies in France 2004, and Gévaudan, exported to the UK and successfully competing in Working Hunter Pony classes among others. Charm's daughter Tulira White Heather was exported to Denmark where her daughter Rystinge Medusa was a Class 1 mare and who has been successfully competing in dressage. Medusa's half brother Rystinge Mackay, exported to Sweden, brings the Star of Fahy branch to a close.

The next branch of the Molly Conneely family is perhaps the internationally best known. Muffy was born in 1959 and became a very successful brood mare, Many of her foals were successful in the youngstock classes of Clifden shown and many were exported abroad. Muffy's oldest daughter, Glenlo Muffy came to Sweden already in 1967 as a three-year-old. Travelling in utero with her was the future stallion Hummelbro Daf, several times gold awarded in the show ring and recipient of the Swedish Connemara society breeding award in 1985. Among the progeny are a large number of performance ponies, diploma mares, gold awarded progeny, two breed show champions, an Elite daughter, a stallion son and a quality test winner. Glenlo Muffy's oldest daughter, Hummelbrod Mercedes, had a carreer both as a show jumper during the first part of the 1980-ies, and before that as a brood mare. Her daughter Hagens Bitte is twice gold awarded art the breed show and the dam of the Finnish export Hagens Freja, class-winner with a strong silver at a local Swedish show before leaving her birth country.

Muffy's oldest son, Moycullen Dan, was exported to Belgium and is perhaps best known in Sweden for the Irish-bred daughters that were exported to Sweden: Moy Gay Nora, Moy Grey Lassie and the Elite mare Dame Grainne. The Muffy daughter Ocean Sky was exported to the Netherlands and the Arenbosch stud. She recieved a ster premium as did her daughter Van de Arenbosch Gitta. A great great great granddaughter, Joy van de Drieskamp is also a ster premium mare. The Brittish Muffy daughter was named Keoltown Muff. She has a very small family in the UK, but her daughter Miss Muffet is the dam of Laxford Gentle Muff, a successful driving pony and ranked number five in the 1991 Performance Award Scheme.

The next Muffy-daughter, Hillside Star, gave rise to a very strong branch of the family in Sweden. Hillside Star has no major show victories to brag about, but showed her worth as a brood mare instead. Her son Hagens Conneely was the fifth most successful dressage Connemara in 1983 and Hagens Falconetti was among top ten 1988 - 1992 and 1995 and was ninth of all breeds in 1991. Hillside Star's last foal, Hagens Golddigger, has been awarded gold in the show ring and also holds an Elite premium and the Swedish Connemara Society brood mare award. Golddigger has no less than 17 foals, and among them are the gold awarded Hagens Kathleen, Hagens Lassie, Hagens Zorba, Hagens Beauty and Hagens Colleen and an amazing seven diploma daughters, the already mentioned and Hagens Pride and Hagens Arleen.

Hagens Kathleen is like her mother and Elite mare. Among her daughters are the quality test winner and the eventing pony Hagens Rosleen, seventh best eventing Connemara in 2000, the diploma mares Hagens Undine and Hagens Xquisite (both also gold awarded in hand) and the gold awarded Hagens Star. From Hagens Xquisite we have among others Hagens Bella, gold awarded in the show ring and taking part in the Young-pony championships last year.

Another Golddigger daughter who proved her value as a brood mare is Hagens Nike. Her oldest daughter Hagens Rebecca is gold awarded like her youngest, Holmtebo Nimble. Best known is, however, her son Carnaby Patrick Hooligan whith his suite of eight consequtive Supreme Championships and many successful progeny with gold in hand, Best of Breed and Best in Show winners, diplomas (both at mare inspections and at three-year-old tests), quality test winners and participants in the young pony finals, far too many to name them all. Another kind of record is held by Nike's daughter Holmtebo Wait For Me who was born after a thirteen months (!) long pregnancy for her dam Nike. Hagens Ofelia is also the dam of successful ponies: Hagens Vanity, Hagens Yenny and Hagens Zelia are gold awarded and Hagens Vanity is also a diploma mare and have competed successfully in dressage. Yenny's daughter Emmy is a diploma mare as well as is Zelias daughter Fairy. Hagens Pride was the dam of the 1993 years best foal at the breed show, Gunne Ettan. And Hagens Arleen has also a gold awarded daughter, Hagens Eileen.

To return to Muffy her following two foals were successful at Clifden show. Ballyconree Hero was third in the two-year-old colt class in 1975 and was later exported to France and Miss Muffs won her class as a foal the same year. Miss Muffs stayed in Ireland and became a brood mare. Her daughter was third as a three-year-old in her class at the Dublin Horse Show and her granddaughter Lough Fadda Black Bush was also third at the same age, but at Clifden show. Black Bush's dam Hillside Heather is also the dam of the Swedish export Rosscon Village Lad and from Miss Muff's daughter Eileen's Pride branches of the family continue to Germany, Belgium and the UK.

The next son of Muffy's was perhaps her most successful, Murphy Rebel. In 1982 he was secon in the class for stallions located in Connemara, but his biggest success was as a sire. Among his offspring are Clifden winners like Moorland Juliet and Derry Playboy; the double Clifden Supreme Champions Queen Gillian and Coral Misty; Clifden reserve youngstock champion Lishmar Fiona; BCPS breed show winner Winnie the Silver Mint; BCPS reserve champion Bramble Lass; successful Working Hunter Ponies Rebel Flight and Elaphine Murphy to name but a few. According to the Irish stud book Murphy Rebel was born in 1976. The year after, there's a colt foal, a full brother of Murphy Rebel who was third at Clifden both as a foal and as a yearling. Whether this is actually Murphy rebel and there's been a mix-up of birth years or if it is another Muffy progeny who was never registred I do not know.

Hillside Lady is the next Muffy foal in line. She was third in the class for filly foals at the 1980 Clifden show, but I've only been able to find two daughters. The oldest is Lady Duff who was exported to the UK and became a brood mare at the Hayselden stod. She was awarded a mare premium in 2004 for her successful progeny both in-hand and ridden. Hayselden Artemis, Hayselden Daphnis and Hayselden Xenia have all won their in hand classes at the British breed show and Hayselden Thalia was Working Hunter Pony champion at the ridden breed show in 2003. Hayselden Phoebe has twice won the same title at a local Connemara show. Hillside Lady's second daughter is Hillside Star II who like her namesake was exported to Sweden. Here she's been awarded an in-hand gold at several breed shows and she won the class for older mares in 2001. While still in Ireland she was furthermore twice among the top three at Clifden show.

Muffy's youngest daughter was born in Muffy's 25th year. This didn't prevent Muffeen from being second in the Clifden filly foal class that year. Muffeen's son Streamstown Larry was third in his class in 1993 and is the sire of the 1994 youngstock champion Dooneen Thunder, the 1998 winning colt foal, the 1999 foal champion Lakeside Lassie, also class winner in 2005, and the 2004 supreme champion Miss Daisy to mention but a few.

With daughters like Star of Fahy and Muffy, Molly Conneely's contribution to the breed can hardly be questioned. However, she has yet another daughter. Mistress Molly is listed in volume XII of the Irish stud book as born in 1966 and with Molly Conneely as her dam. Some might want to ad a question mark here as that would mean that Molly Conneely had her at the age of 28 if all information is correct. Be that as it may, but this red roan was exported to Sweden leaving the daughter Mistress Mandy, later exported to France, in Ireland. Mistress Molly was never entered in the Swedish stud book, but has six registred progeny among which are the two performance ponies Mister Storm (show jumping) and Tiger Prince (show jumping and eventing). Another competing descendant is the partbred Misty out of the daughter Monia.

Many thanks to Joan Latty for correcting my mistake regarding Castle Beau Geste and for providing additional information and a photo of him.
