The little village Roundstone in Connemara will have the Swedish Connemara fan immediately thinking of one thing - Roundstone Chief, the first Swedish Connemara stallion. But a decade and a half before him, Rambler, a 140 cm high grey mare of unknown breeding lived here. Rambler had four foals of whom the second, Evening Rambler, without doubt was the most important one.
Evening Rambler was a brown mare by Dun Lorenzo and she was born in 1956 and she was the dam of six registered daughters and the stallion Rebel Rambler who, like his sister Lakeview Eileen, was exported to the Netherlands. Evening Rambler's first registred progeny was Bridgeen, by Doon Paddy. Her daughter, Keyhole of Abbeyleix, was exported to the UK as a two-year-old where she became a foundation mare at the Spinway stud. Sara Hodgkins describes her in the Connemara Chronicle number 20 as a very typical Mac Dara mare and that she "had the most superb temperament, and she absolutely adored attention and fuss, and she passed on her super nature to all her foals." Keyhole was also successful as a brood mare, won the progeny class at the 1992 British breed show and became a "premium mare" the same year. Of Keyhole's offspring Laudale Rannoch, Spinway Windflower, Spinway Windrose and Spinway Windfall have won ther class at the British breed show. Spinway Windrose was also foal champion in 1989 and Spinway Windflower was chosen reserve supreme champion in 1992. Spinway Windrose was also very successful in the British Performance Award Scheme during the second part of the 90ies.
Spinway Windfall, like her dam, became a brood mare at the Spinway stud. Her daughter, Spinway Star Gift, also became a Spinway brood mare, won the veteran class at the 2009 British breed show and was awarded an In Hand Progeny premium the following year. Another daughter, Spinway Worth Waiting, was champion at the Wales and Borders show in 1999. From the same branch of the family we find Spinway Ceres, foal champion at the 1993 British breed show and reserve champion at the 1996 Chilter and Thames show ; Spinway Gracious, youngstock champion at the 2006 British breed show; Spinway Token, in hand champion at a 2010 local show and Martlets Amber Rose, 9th in the 2000 - 2001 Performance Award Scheme. Renvyle Midas Modesty, son of Spinway Harvest Mouse, was exported to France and was reserve champion at the 2009 Loire show. Laudale Rannoch's daughter Sillbridge Miranda, was exported to the USA and Keyhole's oldest daughter, Spinway Windrush, went to the Netherlands.
After Keyhole, Bridgeen had three progeny by Killyreagh Kim. The oldest, Clonboo Lassie, is the dam of Fair Exchange. Her son, Dangan Boy is the sire of the Danish class 1 mare, Skatholm Rose, and won the stallion class at the 2007 north German show. Dangan Boy's sister Justine stayed in Ireland, but her son, the gelding Tommy Mac, have had a successful dressage career in the US. A granddaughter of Justine, Curragh Court Lady, was a class winner at the 2009 Clifden show, Supreme Champion at the Athenry show and reserve champion at the Westport show 2010.
Bridgeen's youngest daughter was Aileen Grey from 1976. She is the dam of the Swedish export, Aille Mosaic, brood mare at the Elektor stud, and dam of the Finnish export Elektors Elinas Pride, but it is from the next daughter of Evening Rambler, the 1964 foal by Mac Dara, Dusky, that we find the strongest Swedish contribution from the Rambler family.
In 1971 Dusky had a daughter by the name of Dusky Deirdre who was exported to France. Her part bred son Rocambole III is the sire of Idole de la Janiere, a member of the French eventing team that won a silver in the 2004 European championships, and fourth at the 2005 French championships. Dusky's daughter from 1975, Dusky Rambler, was exported to the Netherlands, where she was the dam of the "ster" premium Splandor van Graaf Janshof. Her daughter Hidi Rambler had a successful carreer in hand and was placed second as a yearling, third as a five-year-old in 1983 and won her class and was reserve champion at the 1984 Clifden show. She was later exported to the UK and became a brood mare at the Scottsway stud. Her son Scottsway Hesitation qualified to the ridden finals at Olympia in 2009.
In Sweden we know are most familiar Hidi Rambler's 1987 daughter Creewood Folly. As a two-year-old she was imported to Sweden and she became a brood mare at the Lofty stud. Five progeny followed and thereafter a career under saddle with competition points both in eventing and in show jumping. In hand she was gold awarded and won her class at the 1991 breed show and she was second in 1996 when she also won a gold in the progeny class.
From Creewood Folly we find a string of interesting ponies. We have the performance ponies Lofty Goodwin (show jumping and eventing) and Lofty Lovely Rambler (show jumping, eventing and dressage); John Ambler with double awards at the three-year-old test and Gevas Lady Hennessy with a jumping award and a second place at the national finals. Lofty Lovely Rambler, Lofty Jolly Rambler and Lofty Good Chance all have had an allround score above 8 at the quality test and there have been quality test awards to the part bred Miss Arial (gaits), Poetic Albin (jumping) and of course Poetic Kelly (jumping) with a second place at the national quality test finals. Kelly also won the young pony championships as a five-year-old and participated in the jumping championships as a six-year-old. At this years Swedish champion ships for young ponies, Kelly won the gold for six-year-olds in the 140 - 148 cm height category.
In hand we find the diploma mares Lofty Jolly Rambler, Lofty Lovely Rambler, Halle Liffey and Gevas Lady Hennessy. Julia Rambler, Justin Rambler, Lofty Hazy Rambler, Gevas Lady Hennessy, Halle Louisiana and Fiona II have all been awarded at local shows and the first three were at the same time given the Best of Breed title. Lofty Goodwin and Lofty Good Chance have won their class at the breed show and Lofty Lovely Rambler has been gold awarded as has Lofty Jolly Rambler, Lofty Hazy Rambler and Halle Liffey who all have taken fine titles: Liffe was youngstock champion in 2001, Jolly Rambler was reserve youngstock champion in 1992 and youngstock and supreme champion in 1992 and Lofty Hazy Rambler was supreme champion in 2006. Halle Lafferty has in his new home, in Finland twice been youngstock champion and one year also reserve Best of Breed at the national pony show.
There is one last branch of the Rambler family to be presented before wrapping up. Evening Rambler's youngest daughter, Evening Breeze, was born in 1976. Her daughter Cool Night Breeze seems so have made her way to the UK, but before then she was in Ireland the dam of among others Black River Beauty. Her oldest foal, the gelding Robe Dulla, showed his jumping talents when he as a six-year-old won the jumping championships in Ireland. He two was exported to the UK. Two of his half siblings, Aero Dea and Maam River Beauty, have been exported to Sweden. I have not been able to find out what have happened to them here, but maybe there will be more results to add from additional Swedish branches of Rambler's mare family.
