Silva IRE 1102

The mare Silva was born in 1942. Apart from having a career as a riding pony hunting and competing in show jumping, she was the dam of ten registered offspring, the last born when Silva herself was 25 years old. Three of her progeny were approved as stallions and Galway Lad, Silva's first offspring won the colt foal class at Clifden show 1954, but neither of the sons made any major imprint as a stallion. Instead it was up to Silva's daughters to pass on her legacy.

Silva's first daughter, Silvan Vale, has the sam birth year as her brother Connemara Mick, by Creganna Winter, but she instead has Tully Lad given as her sire. A mixup of the birth years seem likely and one of the two is probably born 1956 instead of 1955. However that might be Silvan Vale has played a much larger role in spreading Silva's genes than either of her brothers. Her first daughter, Coosheen Cowrie, was one of the early Swedish imports and came to Sweden already in 1965. Cowrie's Swedish-born son Cyrus evented successfully and was the third most successful Connemara in eventing during 1980.

Her first foal, Cowrie had, however, in Ireland and this daughter, Coosheen Cockle, gave rise to a substantial branch of the family. Of Cockles foals ten had the prefix Coosheen. The eleventh, Ballymaquive Cockle Shell, was exported to the Netherlands where she became the dam of Van de Arenbosch Bally who, like her dam, was exported to Germany. In Germany, Bally had the son St. Torbax, class winning gelding at the German breed shows in 1987 and 1990. Bally's daughter, Bamy Bell, won her class at the Northern Germany show in 1991 and the progeny class at the German breed show in 2002. As a broodmare at the Twilight stud Bamy Bell was the dam of the stallion Twilight Burning, class winner at the Northern Germany show in 1989 and the breed show in 1990. She was also the dam of Twilight Blossom, highly successful in the show ring with five wins at the breed shows during the 90ies and 00ies and with Supreme Championships in 2001 and 2002 as icing of the cake. The winninf foals at the 2007 and 2009 Northern Germany shows, Glad Taradai and Glad Jerome, are also descendants of Bamy Bell.

Coosheen Laura was born in 1973 and was the first of Coosheen Cockle's eight foals by Coosheen Finn. She was second at Clifden show both as a yearling and as a three-year-old and was afterwards exported to Australia where she was Champion Connemara mare at the Melbourne Royal Show as a four-year-old. Her daughter Aran Francesca, was Champion at the Victoria show 1990, and Laura's descendants Ballintapper Galahad, Ballantrae Fiesta and Ballantrae Flora have all made a name of themselves as performance ponies.

Another three of Coosheen Cockle's daughters with Coosheen Finn have been in the ribbons at Clifden show. Coosheen Pearl was second as a two-year-old and was later exported to the Netherlands where she was awarded a ster premium. She was also the dam of Daan, stallion class winner at the Northern Germany show 1993 and Van de Arenbosch Rodger, fifth at the Dutch eventing championships in 1999. Coosheen Jubilee was second at Clifden show as a five-year-old and won as a six-yearl-old. One of her daughters, Dangan Judy, was exported to Sweden and could be seen at the 1989 breed show where she was awarded a silver. Coosheen Limpet was second at Clifden show as a three-year-old and won the same year her class and was Champion Connemara at the Royal Dublin Show. Coosheen Lucinda, finally, has no Clifden show record, but was exported to Sweden and was a successful show jumper here during the 1990ies.

Silvan Vale's daughters were popular in the early days of Swedish Connemara breeding and Coosheen Cowrie's full sister from 1960, Erin's Own, came to Sweden the same year as Cowrie. She was awarded a silver in the progeny class at the 1978 Värnberg show and in her progeny list we find several interesting name. Not surprisingly she was awarded the Swedish Connemara Society brood mare award in 1983. Erin's Own's dayghter Aurora won the class for two-year-old fillies at the 1973 breed show. Her half brother is the approved stallion Athos, class winner and Champion stallion at the breed show and gold awarded at a local show. In 1977 he won the performance test for warmbloods. Kåsta Alexandra, Erin's Own's daughter from 1976, is a diploma mare and gold awarded at a local show. The approved stallion son Kåsta Scaramouche won the stallion class at the Värnberg show twice and was reserve supreme champion in 1979. He was second at the 1981 Connemara performance test before being exported to Finland where he several times was Connemara Champion at the national pony show and had a long line of successful progeny. Delilah had a successful show jumping career during the 80ies and 90ies and was among the 100 best show jumping ponies both in 1989 and 1993. Kåsta Eliza was gold awarded at the 1983 breed show and took competition points in both show jumping and dressage. Kåsta Evita, finally, was exported to Finland too where she won the Connemara youngstock championship at the 1986 national pony show.

From Kåsta Alexandra comes the sturdiest branch of Erin's Own's family. Among her progeny we find show jumpers such as Gondola, Gruyère and Port Salut. Gondola's daughter Ambrosia is a diploma mare and was gold awarded at the 1999 Hagen show. As a brood mare she's the dam of among others Ginger, gold awarded at the breed show and after a second place at the performace test as a four-year-old she has had a fine career during the 00ies as a dressage pony with a silver in a 2008 county championships. Ginger's full brother, Golden Garlic, is an approved stallion who has also had a successful dressage career after participating in the young pony finals as a five-year-old. From the Swedish Connemara Championships he has several silver medals and he has also a county championship bronze from 2009. In the show ring he has won the stallion class at the breed show and been gold awarded. Among Ambrosia's other offspring we find Faithful Touch, gold awarded as a foal and participant in the young pony jumping championships; Faithful Joy, with a dressage award from the performance test and Harmoni Sun, gold awarded at a local show.

In 1965 Silvan Vale had the daughter Leam Vale who has given rise to a strong Irish branch of the family. Her daughter Garbo is the granddam of Killaun Cloud, a show jumper exported to Sweden. Garbo's sister Primrose is the great granddam of another to another Swedish export show jumper, Cabra Max. Primrose's daughter Villa Star was in the top three at Clifden show both in 1996 and 2001. Star's daughter Villa Colleen did one better and won her class and was youngstock champion in 1996, and also placed third in 1995 and 1997. She was later exported to Germany where she was Supreme Champion at the German breed show in 2004 and 2006. Among her foals at the Glaskopf stud are Glaskopf Grey Carol, class winner and youngstock champion at the breed show 2004; Glaskopf Golden Miles, class winner at the 2006 breed show; Glaskopf Golden Morris, Class winner at a regional show and Swedish export Glaskopf Grey Cecily. Colleens sister, Villa Laura, was exported to the UK where she was the dam of Chilham Lola, class winner and reserve youngstock champion at the 2011 Brittish breed show.

Silva's daughter from 1960, Pulleha, won her class at Clifden show as a two-year-old filly and won at the Royal Dublin Show at the age of four, but had no registered daughters. Her one year younger full sister, Silva Crown of Coosheen, has given rise to a French branch of the family through her daughter Vita. Vita's half sister Bealacana Jewel came through Denmark to Sweden in 1974. She competed in show jumping during the 80ies before being used as a brood mare, fortunately when one sees her offspring. Jewel's Loopy was among the top ten show jumping Connemaras in 1995 and 1996 and in 1995 he was 23rd among all breeds. His show jumping career then continued during the rest of the 90ies and 00ies. Jewel's part bred daughter, Quinnzana, also competed in show jumping during the late 90ies and 00ies and was among the top 100 show jumping ponies in 2000 and 2001 and took a county championship gold in 2004. Jewel's Boogedy showed that he too had inherited the performance gene, although he had his success in the dressage arena instead. Hopefully this performance branch of Silva's family will have the opportunity to go on and produce more successful competition ponies.
