Silver Bridle IRE 394

Silver Bridle was born more than eighty years ago. She was a red roan and was registred in 1937, at 16 years of age. Four years later she had her one registred foal, the daughter Silver Rebel. Silver Rebel's oldes daughter, Cushatrough Las, was one of only a few by the Irish Draught cross Farravane Boy. Pat Lyne tells in her books though about rumours of it rather being Carna Dun who was the sire of Cushatrough Lass. Be that as it may, Cushatrough Lass had a sucessful show career. She won her class at Clifden show both as a two and three year old and as a three year old she also won the Killanin Cup for best younger mare. The following year she was second in a ridden class at Dublin Horse Show and was exported to Britain. Here she continued her career and won her class at the Royal Windsor Show 1958 and was champion at Hindon Pony Show two years later. As a brood mare she wasn't as lucky. After two sets of dead twins by Snowball she finally had the daughter Mylerstown Peach. Among Peach's offspring is Mylerstown Fuchsia who won her class at the Brittish breed show both as foal and as yearling and two year old. Fuchsias son Mylerstown Campion won his class as a yearling and was registred as a shallion, but was later gelded when no buyer could be found. Peach's full brother Mylerstown Huckleberry Finn won the class for younger stallions in 1977 and was later exported to Australia. His Brittish born son Rosenaharley Rowley made the headlines by being exported back to Ireland.

Cushatrough Lass's two years younger sister Flash Girl was also very sucessful at Clifden show. She won her class every year with the exception of as a two year old when she was second. She also won titles like champion young mare and champion mare in her days. In 1964 she won her class at the Royal Dublin Spring Show and was later sold for the highest price ever paind for a Connemara, £500. Regrettably she died only ten years old. Fortunately she had already left offspring who made sure to bring the heritage on. Of her sons Atlantic Storm is the by far the most famous whith daughters like Boden Park Hailstones, champion young mare at Clifden in 1988; Monkcastle Shamrock and Wild Wood 4th, Danish class 1 mares; Floor Coleen, reserve champion at the 1977 Dutch breed show and ster and preferent mare, and in Sweden among others the Elite mare Kinvara Peggy, the gold awarded Camelia and the stallion mother Blue Chip.

Flash Girl's second son, Ballydoogan Clondagoff, won the stallion class at Clifden in 1966 and has also a ster mare in the Netherlands, Breda's Pet, and in Sweden is the unregistred show jumper Lakeview Gil. The youngest Flash Girl son, Flashy Lad, was exported to Germany. Here, in partnership with Golden Harvest, he was the sire of several Stats Premie mares: Godiva, Golden Gloria, Golden Liberty and Golden Lady. The latter has also been champion at the German breed show and is an Elite mare.

Flash Girl's oldest daughter, Flash Judy, won the class for younger mares at the 1962 Royal Dublin Spring Show and was exported to Britain. There she was champion Connemara at the National Pony Society show and had three foals before falling victim to the dreaded grass sickness. The oldest daughter, Monkcastle Flash Easter, won her class at the British breed show both as a yearling and as a two year old before she became a brood mare at the Lammermuir stud. Her son, Lammermuir Flash Rebel, qualified to the ridden Mountain and Moorland championships at Olympia. A daughter of Flash Easter, Lammermuir Linnet was exported to Denmarka and was second in her class at the 1977 international Connemara show at Roskilde. Among her offspring are the twins Golden Ling and Golden Ping and Asmindrupgårds Lucky Lips, reserve champion at the Danish jubilée show in 1989. Other descendants of Linnet are Asmindrupgårds Dicky-Bird, Champion at Sealand 1990; Skousboe Hero, Champion at Sealand 1977; Nygårds Fölfod, reserve champion at Bornholm 2000 and elected best pony of the inspections; and lately Dambaekgårds Flash Fashion, champion foal at Sealand 2001.

Flash Judy's younger daughter, Monkcastle Flash Fortune, won her class at the Royal Show in 1970. She's however perhaps best known as the dam of Holton Flash Favour, premium mare and one of the foundation mares of the Bardsey stud. Bardsey is an inaccessible island off the Welsh coast and here Favour spent the major part of her life. Here she gave birth to many successful offspring and the life on thehilly island trained them to be good performance ponies. Bardsey Promise was reserve champion at Olympia in 1990 and qualified again to the finals in 1992. His full brother, the stallion Bardsey Zodiac, qualified three times with a sixth place as his best result. Bardsey Elaine has made a name of herself in the Performance Award Scheme and Bardsey Token was also an eager and successfull contender at many year's Connemara shows. Bardsey Zodiac has also passed on the performance genes. The son Acorn was third in the Performance Award Scheme a couple of years ago and the part bred Brigg View Bishops Gem won a silver at the 2001 European pony championships in eventing. A daughter of Zodiac's has been exported to Canada where she was champion in 2001. Breeding-wise Favours most successful daughter has been Bardsey Trinket who have had many good offspring with Locking Frederick. Eastlands Burnibrae, Eastlands Lucy Locket, Eastlands Micklebrae and Eastlands Dunielle have all won at the British breed show and Burniebrae was youngstock champion and reserve overall champion in 2001, the same year as Trinket was champion at the Scottish local show. Another daughter, Eastlands Glendearg has been exported to Canada and was appointed Connemara of the Year in 2002.

Flash Princess, the next daughter of Flash Girl was exported, like her full brother Flashy Lad,to Germany and gave rise to a successful clan. Two sons became breeding stallions: Lotos, sire of the premium mare Dreikronen With Pleasure and the two years younger Logana Rex who is the father of Abandoned Dream, the 2003 champion at the South German show, and Atlantic Queen, Germany's third best dressage Connemara the same year. Of the daughters Fortuna has been themost successful. She's a Stats Premie and Elite mare. Two of her daughters, Farina VPS and Fonda, are likewise Stats Premie mares, like the grandson Lisa by Juwel. Farina is also, like her dam, an Elite mare.

After the success of Cushatrough Lass and Flash Girl, Silver Rebel's value as a brood mare was obvious and John and Phyllis Meade from the Leam stud bought her, but left her with a good friend in Connemara so that she could have foals by Mac Dara. Silver Rebel, howeve, proved to have a strong homing instinct when her foals were due and walked back to her previous owner to foal. After a couple of years the friend tired of her and sent her back to England where she stayed at the Leam stud until her death at 26 years of age. In 1961 she was taken to the British breed show and she returned home whith the championship title. One of Silver Rebel's foals by Mac Dara, Siobhan of Leam, had a nice show career and was champion in hand at the big Ponies of Britain show in 1968, 1969 and 1971. After finishing her show career she became a brood mare at the Gaylesbrook stud and became a premium mare in 1984 for her good offspring.

So are there any Swedish connection to this family? Well, in 1965 Silver Rebel had a filly by Keirin of Leam and she, Leam Silver Dollar, was exported to Sweden. Her branch of the family may not be the largest, but in spite of that not without its merits. Silver Dollar only had three foals in Sweden. One of those is Sunshine II who successfully competed in dressage during the 80ies and 90ies. 1983, 1985 and 1986 he was on the list of the ten best dressage Connemaras in Sweden with a second place in 1985. He was also shown in hand at a local show in 1982 with 39 points and a second place as a result.

Santana was Silver Dollar's only daughter. She was gold awarded at a local show in 1977 and the year after she was third in her class at the breed show. Her offspring with Holiday Prince has been successful in the performance circuit. Victoria II, Gorm and Sifka have all competed successfully in show jumping and Sifka also in dressage. The daughter Ylva won the quality test in 1982 and was best jumper, and Yrsa was likewise best jumper as well as best dressage pony at the 1989 quality test. Ylva won her class at the local show at Kläringe in 1983 with 41 points and Sifka scored the same at the 1989 breed show. Saga is also gold awarded and won the 2000 breed show veteran class. From saga other good ponies descend. Her sons Starke and Halle Salix are both breed show gold awardees and Halle Scilla out of Sanna was reserve youngstock champion at the 2000 breed show. Another Santana daugher, Ulla III, was exported to Finland where she left another little branch of the family.

Silver Dollar's full sister, Leam Silver Shoes, was the one to carry on the heritage at the Leam stud. Like so many of her relatives she had a successful show career. In 1975 she was champion mare at the Brittish breed show and in 1979 she was reserve to the same title. The year after she was elected best veteran mare. Also her offspring have done well in the show ring. Leam Silver Spoon was champion foal and won his class as a yearling. The full sister Leam Silver Tynagh won the class for older mares in 1996 and Leam Silver Tankard was runner up points champion at the 1988 ridden show. Leam Silver Finn was approved as a stallion and later exported to the Netherlands where he sired among others the ster mare Avalon van Graaf Janshof and multiply awarded Bibi van de Leliaard.

One of Silver Shoes's daughters, Leam Silver Bells, became a brood mare at the Great Bradley stud and if you look through old issues of the Connemara Chronicle you finde her daughter Great Bradley Sea Chimes as the dam of performance ponies time and again. Great Bradley Henry Bell was highly placed in the Performance Award Scheme every year during the secon half of the 90ies with a victory in 1998 as icing of the cake. During his time as a stallion he also sired the Olympia qualified Redewood Corolla. Henry Bell's full brother, Great Bradley Merryman was also points champion at the 1992 performance show and the sister Great Bradley Tinker Belle was reserve to the same title at the 1998 ridden show where she once again proved that the Silver Bridle family can produce both show winners and performance ponies.
