Winnie IRE 141

The first inspections of Connemara ponies were held in 1924. The goal was to select the animals that were most suited to be the foundation upon which the future breed would rest. Only the very best mares and stallions were to be selected and entered in the stud book, and the comittee was careful. Out of 284 ponies only 65 were selected, not even a quarter. After the inspections the report to the board read: "We are of the opinion that the majority of the selected mares are as true to type and fully as good as the best which have been bred in Connemara in the past. After careful consideration we have come to the conclusion that these will form an excellent foundation stock, which properly utilised, will become the basis of an improved breed of ponies that will prove admirably suited to local requirements and command a ready market furhter afield." (from: Connemara Pony Breeders' Society, Elizabeth Petch.)

Looking at the mares who came to build the foundation for the future pony breed, and which of these mare families have founded new families in Sweden, it's hardly possible to start elsewhere but with Winnie. It turned out that very few of the mares entered in the first volume of the stud book ever had offspring entered in following volumes. This was hardly due to any lack of quality in the mares but rather that sure information about pedigrees were missing. Winnie is one of the many mares that are entered in the stud book without a pedigree. In volume V, under her son Cashel Star her sire is identified as Charlie 2 and in Elizabeth Petchs book it can be read that her dam was Cashel Dolly 13. Thus this mare family can be traced back to the very first ponies that were inspected and approved for the stud book.

Winnie was bred in 1927 by Thomas King, who was the postman of Cashel. Thomas also owned Winnies dam Cashel Dolly and took his ponies to the early shows. As a foal Winnie won a prize at the Carna show where the breeders of the best foals were given a sum for keeping them in Connemara. Three years later she won the championship for mares six years old or younger at the Oughterard show. Winnie only has two offspring entered in the stud book. Her son Cashel Star didn't leave any major marks in the Irish stud book. Only a handful of ponies with the Glencara prefix and to sons in the USA.

Winnie's daughter, Winnie II, had a larger impact. She was the mother of eight registred offspring. The stallion Win Lorenzo was sold out of Connemara and sired only a few ponies. A daughter, Winnie III, was the dam of the stallion Dunmacreena who was exported to the UK but did not leave any deep hoof prints either. Of the five daughters it was Winifred who kept the line going in Connemara. Her full sister on the other hand were sold and found her way to Lambay Island and therefrom on to the Hummelbro and Hagen studs in Sweden.

That Lambay Winnie has founded a successful family in Sweden can hardly be denied. She has been gold awarded at shows and for her success as a brood mare she has been awarded with the Swedish Connemara Society brood mare award and posthumously an Elite premium. To in detail go into all the ponies in this large and successful branch of the Winnie family is close to impossible. Going through horse magazines one runs across names from among Lambay Winnies descendants over and over again. Three of her daughters, Hummelbro Victoria, Hagens Andora and Hagens Fondora have been awarded the Elite premium just as the great great granddaughter Hagens Joy. Hummelbro Victoria, Hagens Andora and Hagens Fondora have also been awarded the SCS brood mare award. A number of descendants have been gold awarded with a maximum of 43 points to the gelding Hagens Ricky. Hagens Andora has been show champion and Hagens Ricky and Hagens Jaguar have been runner up. Hagens Pandora and Lindens Victory have been runner up for junior championships. Diploma mares are Hagens Andora, Hagens Joy, Hagens Natalie, Hagens Tancy, Hagens Vicky, Hagens Yandora and Hagens Yulie and Hagens Andora is the dam of the families approved stallion Hagens Jaguar.

Also as performance ponies have the descendants of Lambay Winnie been successful. Hagens Cornamona, Hagens Ninnie, Hagens Kevin and Hagens Qumulus have all won at the quality tests and a number of other ponies have been highly placed. Hummelbro Victoria started her carrier as a show jumper and in 1976 she was the most successful Connemara in her height category, C. Other successful ponies are Hagens Flinga and Hagens Qumulus (dressage), Hagens Icaros and Hagens Gigolo (show jumping), and Hagens Kaliber and Hagens Label (eventing). The Swedish branch of the Winnie-line has also spread further east. Hagens Egina, Hagens Helina and also Helina's son Hagens Label have all been sold to Finland.

So what about the Winnie family on Ireland? Well, Winifred was succeeded by her daughter Winnie the Pooh, and with her the family came into the ownership of Thomas King's nephew, Stephen Keaney. With him Winnie the Pooh gave rise to the family's sixth generation in Connemara. One of the daughters, Winnie the Silver Mint, has been sold to the UK and has there been the dam of St. Flannans Fergal who in 1997 won the EIRE performance award. Another of Winnie the Pooh's daughters, Winnie Dear, has stayed with Stephen Keaney to bring the Winnie ponies into the 21st century, and her daughter, Winnie Love, has followed her relatives over to Sweden and become a brood mare at the Hagen stud.
